Character-Sheet: Jasper Pierce

Post by Jasper_Pierce on Wed Aug 06, 2014 8:45 pm

Name: Jasper Pierce

Age: 17

Year: Junior

Appearance: Jasper's base features are remarkable for the setting and solidify his appearance as a fish out of water. At 167 cm (5'6") tall and only 125 pounds, his curly brown hair and soft, pale skin complete a sensitive look with long lashes perched over hazel eyes. His school uniforms and casual clothes are often joined with a sleek leather eyepatch covering his left eye underneath thick corrective lenses. His casual clothes consist of black jeans and a purple V-neck T-shirt, while undressing to a casual robe and sweatpants combination in the evenings. Other accessories include a gray rain poncho and a vintage vest with the "taijitu" symbol inscribed in the back. Varieties of shoes include "Cuban-heeled" boots and canvas sneakers.

Backstory: Born premature at three months before his due date in May of 2005, Jasper Pierce was born into the world with stunted dexterity and poor vision. Suffering retinal detachment in his left eye, he has spent his whole life half-blind with no sense of depth perception. While his right eye is very nearsighted, requiring glasses, the left eye lost all light perception and stopped growing out of shock. Growing up in the American city of Atlanta, the Pierce family straggled the poverty line all throughout his childhood. This sadly contributed to a slight inferiority complex, starting early in his life. Jasper attended physical therapy for years with the intent of regaining his lost motor skills, at the detriment of lost time at public school. Starting in the third grade, he began seeing an optics specialist to monitor the condition of his eyes. A nasty sports accident that year left the boy with a minor hemorrhage in his right eye, blurring his vision for a week. Scares like this left him timid and nonathletic, rendering him a bit of an introvert. However, it was through seeing this specialist that he first learned of the "miraculous" possibilities of stem-cell treatment, as a possible way to heal his eye. His family completely supported the idea, but never managed to get their voices heard when he was young.

Bullied and ostracized from his peers, he looked inward for comfort, staying at home with his books and his family. As an incredibly "beta" male with nerdy interests, the bullying only got worse with junior-high school. His grades suffered as well, pushing the inferiority complex and pulling down his grade-point-average by the time of his transfer to a measly 2.8, right as his sister is accepted into graduate school. Back during his junior-high years, Jasper first meddled in spirituality as an escape from the stress of school. For the past two years he's heavily researched Taoist philosophy, as his father was the one to recommend it to him during a particular turbulently teenage chapter of his life. Finding true use for this sort of religion in his daily life, he considers himself a total convert, and passes the time reading and practicing all sorts of eccentric hobbies, including herbal medicines and brewing natural "tonics" of herbs and spices, falling in line with his other passions for cooking and baking.

His older sister was always much more social than him, and quite the achiever to boot. His father was, at the time, cycling through blue-collar jobs in the construction world from sheet-rock finishing to scaffold-rigging. The stress of hard work and low pay manifested in a short-tempered alcoholic for a father, but in his moments of sobriety the wellness of his intent couldn't be denied. Meanwhile, his mother worked freelance as an artist for most of his youth, but as she aged and times changed she picked up her tools less often. Today, Jasper's sister Katie goes to University in America, while the cycle of poverty endured by his family was broken with the takeoff of his father's books, self-published over the Internet.

A growing dissatisfaction with the education and healthcare his son was getting in the States led to his father rashly expatriating and pooling the funds together for his son to finish his education overseas at Yamaku. When he asked his father why he'd need to vacate across the world just to finish getting his diploma, his father explained that a school such as Yamaku can provide a healthy learning environment as well as a more intimate study of his eyes' condition as he matures. Paying for a small apartment on the southern coast of Japan, his parents promise to remain close while fulfilling their own personal dreams of cruising around the world. Meanwhile, his sister suspects that blowing all of that money on tuition and medical care was a sheepish way to "pay up" for years without summer vacations, or birthdays and Christmases that went by rather thin on the gifts. Still, his parents maintain that a healthy private environment would be less stressful, and the opportunity for frequent eye checkups and another physical therapy regimen "is just what you'd to stay healthy." All other possible high school choices in either America or Europe seemed to have even more ludicrous rates, with his father flat-out refusing several on principal based on how they distributed their budget or whom donated the most money to the school. However, with his parents expatriating with him to Japan, at least he wasn't completely alone. His parents maintained guardianship, and his father likened it to when he was a boy "and the Army shipped grandad and the rest of our family to live in Germany for a couple years." He's been advised to "just think of it as a new school and a vacation," offering their apartment to him whenever he's out of school.

Now transferring in, Jasper is completely unfamiliar with some of the nuances of Japanese schooling, not just including having his own dormitory. A sense of quiet optimism and spiritual assurance helps him adapt to his new environment, and as strange as the transition has been he doesn't resent his family for plucking him out of his old school, writing regularly to his parents or messaging them on Deadbook.
Although Jasper has come to terms with his limited vision and keeps away from most sports or rough activity, he secretly hopes that the nursing staff at Yamaku could help him research the possibilities of stem-cell treatment in re-growing his lame eye. However, the attending physicians have been informed to simply monitor the health of his eyes, watching out for the slightly calcified and withered condition his blinded one is decaying into as the years go by.

Personality: Though eloquent in English, Jasper is rather shy and reserved, embarrassed by his lack of fluency in Japanese. The son of a rags-to-riches American author, the boxes of possessions shipped to his dorm upon arrival suggest a downright eclectic personality. A sensitive, slightly feminine boy, his biggest pursuits are writing, cooking and philosophy. Often he'll pass the time in quiet religious devotion, hiding away in his room most nights to meditate, read, and burn incense when the smoke alarms allow it. Even though he's completely non-fluent in Japanese, a paper sign outside his dorm reads the Chinese phrase, "Ma Gu Xian Shou."
His interest in such a faith seems to compliment his brainy absorption of knowledge. To him, no science could ever go "against" his beliefs, because his beliefs require by default to accept things "as they are." He sees the repairing possibilities of stem-cells to be a wonderful medical breakthrough, almost a material "philosopher's stone."
Jasper, though difficult to get to know, can be very open and empathetic to the right people. Years of friendlessness in public school have left him "used to" solitude, as much as he'd love to have a best-friend, or even something more intimate. His only experience with relationships was a very serious love that lasted for almost a year, before being messily dumped and heartbroken at age sixteen. Even though all of it is but a distant memory, it still haunts him as his last memory of love. His friendships haven't been much better, with disappointingly fewer friends to call as the years went by. Still, his interactions are unassuming in the classroom, being cordial and polite while hiding his slight anxieties and neuroses from his peers. Dedicating himself to being a bit more social as time goes on, you may see him at festivals or school functions, or just out in the town shopping. A new beginning may be just what he needs, even if he feels even more out-of-touch than he did back home.

Personal Details: Please upload a profile picture.

Appearance: (See "Grammar" under this subheading)

Grammar: [Missing word] His casual clothes consist of black jeans and a purple V-neck T-shirt

Other than this it's acceptable.

Backstory:

Spelling: Clear

Grammar:: Clear

Detail:: There's not much detail about his relationships. We're not sure if he has any siblings or is an only child. Not much was stated about his mother, not even his relationship with his father. Which there would have to be some if he cared as much to research alternatives to American education. On this there is more to note, how did Jasper's father end up deciding on Yamaku? What other schools were being looked at? How did he take him out of school?  Also, taking from the sentence following this detail, how was he allowed to send a seventeen year old on his own to another nation for schooling? Has someone at Yamaku agreed to a form of guardianship? If not, has someone in the nation that knows the family?

Other omissions include the lack of information as to how Jasper became a Taoist and his interest in stem cell research. Was it in the family? Did someone introduce him to this path? Did he discover it on his own somehow? Please add this as it's vital to the formation of his current personality as you have it. Regarding his interest in stem cell research, the same is asked. How did he become interested? Does he have an inclination to science? Does any of this contradict or go against his beliefs?

Finally, there's his school life before Yamaku that is also of interest to us. We also don't know much of his relationships in school nor how his time in school has gone for him.

Personality: Some of the sections reference aspects of him not mentioned in the backstory. Please include them in the backstory so we can understand how he became this way.

Please bump the thread after you have made the adjustments. We'll know to review it again then. We look forward to seeing from you.

Updated ^

Thanks for the quick notes, didn't realize how much I'd left out at first considering it was quickly scrawled out late at night. Here's hoping all the extra exposition flows nicely enough. Updated family relationships to make a bit more sense legally, and to throw off the immediate supposition that his parents more-or-less "abandon" him in another country.

First gripe would be that you suddenly bring up what seems to be a year-long girlfriend in the personality section. That would warrant at LEAST a mention in the backstory, no?

Other than that, I like it. You'll have my approval after a profile picture is uploaded and the alterations mentioned by myself and SilentFox have been rectified.

You're almost right there and unless my action is overridden, I am willing to bump this thread to your attention just once more before we move it to denial. Just apply the changes Subverse and I requested and you're through.

*I'll make the appropriate edits, but a friend who was to supply a profile picture for me sorta bailed. If I can't find an artist in time, I'd rather just void my submission until a later date than have it denied.

There is a way we could hold it. We've done it to only one profile this entire run of the forum. I am somewhat perplexed why any other image that seems close wouldn't do but that's not entirely for me to say, it's a subjective matter. However, if you must, it will still be in that section but I'll retrieve it for you for when you do get the image you desire if you so wish. I'd wait some more but once again, if I am overridden, there's hardly much I could do.

For now, I'll give it about three more days, then I'll place it in that section on hold. This however is by my discretion and once more I would like to reiterate this action at any point could be rejected by the majority of the other admins if they decide on the contrary so do note this.

[EDIT: Profile is on hold until September 4th, after that date I don't believe I have that much right to keep it here tenably, I'll revisit it on that date to move it as I mentioned before.]
