Kanjiro was exhausted, lucid and nervous as he stepped out into the courtyard of Yamaku Academy on the morning of the first day of term. He could feel the mania like static in his brain, but it wasn't at the forefront like it usually was. He wasn't a morning person at all; severe sleep deprivation was common with his condition and he always had dark bags on the lower half of his sunken eye sockets. It was rare that he ever slept well, even though he usually took enough sleeping pills before bed to tranquilise all of the students at this school put together.

Maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration.

He flashed his trademark crooked smile at this thought. That smile was often the only thing that kept people from being terrified of him and instead somewhat charmed by him. If they could look past everything else, that is.

However many sleeping pills he took, it still didn't help and the doctors feared giving him a higher dosage would put him in extreme danger. Especially since his choices in sleeping medication were limited given that he had to take pills for his heart condition and the pain from scoliosis in his back. He'd get a few hours of rest for two or maybe three nights on a good week. He'd had an operation on his back for the scoliosis, but it still hurt like hell and he nearly always shuffled as he walked, leaning slightly to the right. He now had some rather grotesque metal clamps in his back, trying to realign his spinal cord somewhat. But they looked like he'd been involved in some sort of accident involving an oversized stapler.

He was trembling quite strongly, and it was difficult to tell whether that was from the tics or his nerves. Probably both. He had a hook from a song stuck in his head. He'd been listening to it earlier as he was getting ready. It was one of his 'downer' songs. They helped settle the mania in his mind and make him lucid at best, or make him more docile at least. But sometimes he was in a mood to embrace the chaos in his mind. In these cases, he had his 'upper' songs to amplify his insane manic personality, or in extremely good cases the happiness he felt from hearing these upper songs helped him reach a lucid state again. Being lucid from his 'upper' songs was much better. He was happier, it lasted longer and was much more clear, but it rarely happened. He wanted to make sure he was at least somewhat lucid when making first impressions. It was almost funny to Kanjiro that he was basically self-medicating with music to get some kind of high and snap out of the fuzzy, chaotic haze his mother must have been hooked on. Yet it was also worrying, if this self-medication became a trend, it would probably converge with the same slippery slope his mother went down, making him the way he was. And technically he was already an addict, despite never having used methamphetamines in his life.

I certainly look the part.

He was lucky to be lucid this morning, he hadn't had a lucid moment for the past two weeks. They were becoming fewer and fewer now, even with his attempts at coping mechanisms. He knew this was temporary and would probably be gone after a couple of hours. Then he began to worry.

If I show up and make a first impression lucid people are going to expect that from me all the time! Damn it, I should have stayed as I was...

He went off on a panicked train of thought for a while before coming back.

Well, I'm here now. I'll just leave it as it is. Or maybe I should act it up a little bit?

He grabbed his head and groaned loudly. All these worried thoughts were giving him a headache, and getting worked up usually made him lose his lucid state.

Just go and do your thing, Kanjiro. You've made your decision now, let's just get through the day.

Kanjiro sighed as he saw the sea of students slowly filing into the school for their first day, talking excitedly. He could mostly tell the freshmen from the others just by the unsettling grin many were putting on to mask their nerves. It was quite a grotesque grin really, obviously fake and most of their eyes seemed wild with fright. Some seemed in their element here, and Kanjiro realised just how much he'd continue to stick out, even in a place full of people who didn't quite fit what society deemed as 'normal'.

He joined the large group of students headed into the building, gripping the crystal-shaped, cyan coloured stone that he wore on a piece of black string. He knew doing so would suppress the worst part of his tics in this sort of situation. He always did this in large groups, not to hide his twitching as his shoulders convulsed just as much, but to avoid accidentally lashing out and hitting someone. This was another coping mechanism he had learned from some pretty embarrassing and dangerous experiences with the general public and the tough kids at the orphanage. He had no idea which class he was going to, or how this first day was going to work. He looked to the person next to him.

"Hi. My name's Kanjiro. I'm a freshman here, and I'm pretty overwhelmed right now, could you help me find my class?" He asked, his lucid voice was deep, clear and confident. Not like the mid-range babbling he usually found himself engaging in.

Like usual when she was going to school Yuka looked rather miserable. She wasn't the kind of person to enjoy any sort of authority or rules, so school was just the kind of environment that would tend to chafe on her. Yet, all the same here she was. Unfortunately, one couldn't just totally skip school. This is what she usually did. She'd show up in the morning, maybe attend her homeroom, but then she'd avoid class entirely if possible. Was she on the roof? Was she out and about in the town? It really depended on what she was feeling. Yuka wasn't the kind of girl to plan anything in advance. She just went wherever the winds, or her whims would take her. She walked on in without really saying much of a word to anyone. Her eyes said everything that needed to be said, and that was pretty much don't mess with me. Even in a school like this, her reputation had preceded her among some of the students. Though the characters that populated this school were far from the usual crowd that she associated with. Yuka's method of association was also frowned upon. Today for some reason she had chosen to wear the proper uniform. Though like everything Yuka did, it wasn't exactly following the rules. Her blouse wasn't tucked in, and she had just left off the tie entirely. The skirt also seemed shorter than usual, though if that was by design or just the fact that the uniform didn't fit her curvy frame as well as it used it remained to be determined.

Just why was she so miserable this morning? She was feeling the pangs of wanting a cigarette. Even if she hadn't reformed from her delinquent ways after her incident, she had quit smoking. There was just nothing that could be fun, but it certainly didn't make her a happier person. Instead of cigarettes, she was angrily sucking on a lolipop. It was a poor replacement, since it also did nothing to help her kick her habit of eating sweets. It also did nothing to curb her habit of violence. Even if no one here was threatening to her in the least, she reacted quite poorly to anyone who accidentally bumped into her giving them a rather rude shove. But that was probably what they expected of her. Yuka might have potentially award winning beauty, but she'd never win an award for manners or personality. Unless the judges really liked violent, rude girls. Yuka wasn't here to win any contest though. She had her gang, what else did she need?

It took her a while to notice that the person beside her was addressing his words to her. Grumbling a bit, she turned to face the male that was talking to her. What did he think she looked like? The class rep? She glowered at him. "What do you think I am? The school map?" She wasn't a freshman, but even if she was, she wouldn't likely have known what he was looking for. "You want my help, you gotta do something for me." She said matter of factly, as if it wasn't unreasonable. She crossed her arms beneath her impressive bust.

Kanjiro noted the beautiful girl, sucking on the lollipop. It would have almost been cute if she hadn't looked so pissed off. She seemed to have taken offense at his asking for help. He knew this kind of girl well, there were many kids like her at the orphanage in Hokkaido. But this girl hadn't seemed immediately intimidated by the way he looked. He thought her request was at least somewhat reasonable and he didn't want to be making any enemies here.

"Ok. What would you need me to do in return?" He asked.

Of course she wasn't intimidated. She was the Delinquent Queen after all. Maybe it wasn't a title that a girl should be proud of it, but she had earned it. That hard look in her eyes wasn't just from a lack of sleep or general disdain of the educational system. Though if she were honest, they definitely did have something to do with it. But it was mostly in her own eyes at least from all the fights she had been in. Oh how she longed to just beat the living hell out of someone. But alas, that was mostly out of reach for her these days. She wasn't to exert herself, and sometimes even the stairs could be murder. Yuka had fallen a long way. It pained her to think about, so she focused on what she could fleece this kid for. Typically she and her gang of toughs could just get kids to turn over their entire wallet. But that probably wouldn't work here. She tugged the lolipop out of her mouth so she could speak more clearly. The candy was bright red, probably a cherry flavor.

"How much money you got on you? I know what you need, but I'm not a charity, so it's going to cost you." Of course, once she found out how much he had, she'd charge him some ridiculous fee.

Usually these tough types hadn't bothered Kanjiro. They didn't mess with him, he didn't mess with them. The path of least resistance. That's always how Kanjiro navigated social situations. He struggled with these things enough, and he'd been fortunate enough to never be in a situation where he had to stand his ground. As such, he sighed and begrudgingly fumbled for his wallet, which was incredibly difficult given his tics and the large group of people surrounding him. Somehow he managed to pull it off without hitting anyone, but he came very close to lashing out and hitting the person in front of him, rightfully earning an angry glare. He opened the small fabric wallet and produced a paltry handful of coins, amounting to a little over ¥100. It was about the bare minimum anyone could have had on them. Maybe enough for a drink from one of the vending machines and a bread roll.

It's good for her I'm lucid. I would have told her where to stick these damned coins...

"I thought you were asking for a favour in return." He said, flashing the coins quickly. He was afraid that if he kept his hand open for too long he would twitch again and throw the coins everywhere. That wouldn't have been good for either of them.

Look how much good that whole path of least resistance thing is doing you now, Kanjiro.

He gritted his teeth. He wasn't happy about this one bit.

She wasn't happy with the paltry amount in the wallet. But it wasn't like roughing him up was going to make more money appear out of thin air. Plus, she wasn't sure how her body would hold up to that kind of exertion. It was a tough place for the Delinquent Queen to be. Strength had been her way of life, and now she wasn't even sure how much of that she had left. The doctors had warned her about too much exertion now. Despite this, Yuka wasn't going to let him keep the money. She placed her hand beneath his, opening her palm for her to drop the coins. Something seemed off about him that was for sure. But Yuka wasn't so brilliant at reading people so she had no idea what it might be.

"A favor? I don't know what world you live in. But in this one, money talks." She was quite jaded for a high schooler that much was apparent. "Now hand over the goods, and I'll tell you where to go." Of course, he could have asked anyone else, but the other students were giving Yuka a wide berth. There were many whispers about her at Yamaku. Stories of gratuitous violence among other things.

"Well, I suppose I'm not able to say much then." He said, attempting a self-deprecating joke and giving his trademark crooked grin.

This grin was quickly replaced by a look of pain. He clenched his fist tightly around the coins as his hands quaked and the rest of his body had a series of small spasms. Once the shaking and pain passed, he dumped the coins into the girl's hand. Kanjiro himself had been surrounded by a wide circle of empty space now, as the other students gave him surprised looks, unsettled by the wave of tics that had washed over him all at once. That was the price he paid for suppressing them. He saw that Yuka had some distance between her and the other students as well. The pair was isolated like an island amongst the sea of students.

Maybe we have more in common than it seems.
