[PRIVATE] Delaying the Inevitable
Monday, September 5th, 2022
Toshiaki, finished with classes for the day, walked into the courtyard to enjoy the afternoon sunshine.
His enjoyment quickly faded when he spotted a face he hadn't seen in a few months, a face he rather would have not seen again.
He stopped a few meters away from him.
"So the rumors are true," he said flatly. "You're back."
Re: [PRIVATE] Delaying the Inevitable
Ever since his return, Wade's life had gone down the drain. His sister refused to speak to him or let him see his niece, his father forced him to look after the abomination that was Saki, and to top it all off everyone at school except for his closest friends thought of him as a freak. Really, that future where everyone got killed off by cyborgs sounded more and more appealing to him by the day. But hey, it wasn't like he could trade places with his future self permanently, so until further notice, Wade was stuck cleaning Future!Wade's mess. His other option was suicide, which he was pretty damn sure wouldn't work, as the universe hated him so much that it would happily give him his father's healing factor just to keep him in this hell for eternity.
Life friggin' sucked. And the sudden appearance of Wade's #1 enemy during one of his few-and-far-in-between moments of rest was not making anything better.
'What do you want, Toshiaki?' he sighed, leaning back against the nearest wall... which was a few steps behind him. Thankfully, Wade managed to retain his balance, but couldn't save himself from looking ridiculous in the process.

His expression remained flat, leering from behind his recently acquired titanium rims.
"Well I'll be, you do know my actual name.
Then again, I guess I already knew that… from your little death threat."

'Death threat?' Wade raised an eyebrow. 'What are you hallucinating this time? Or did you spend too much time on Twitter again?'

Re: [PRIVATE] Delaying the Inevitable
He scoffed.
"That's rich, coming from you. Did you really think no one else would have been able to find the letter? I guess he wasn't nearly as stealthy as he thought.
What the hell did I ever do to you, anyway?"

'The letter? What are you--' Wade prepared to ask, only to suddenly stop dead in his tracks. Could Toshiaki have been talking about... that letter? The one his future self left for him? Now that Wade thought about it, it kinda made sense - the letter did mention that Toshi and Tachbana were never supposed to meet, and that murder was an acceptable countermeasure. But how did Toshiaki even obtain that in the first place?
'Great, so what are you now, some sort of thief? Busting into people's homes and stealing their possessions?' Wade asked, rather uncharacteristically considering his usual carefree persona. Either Toshi had struck a nerve, or the Canadian boy was having a particularly bad day... or most likely both. 'Look, I know about that letter just as much as you do. For all I know it may not have even been written by me. And even if it was, it wasn't really me me, so cut me some slack, alright?'

Re: [PRIVATE] Delaying the Inevitable
Toshi nodded slowly as Wade put it together, then sighed.
"Matter of fact, it was Hawke that handled the entry. I was just along to help. Nothing was stolen either; we left everything right where it was.
"And I did say him, not you.
Whom you might have become if things were different? Maybe. I hope not.
"Although, I wouldn't worry about it; what he talked about doesn't match up with reality anymore, even if you didn't manage a single panty raid."

Wade raised an eyebrow. Hawke? What the hell was he doing rummaging around his stuff, anyway? Then again, the boy had to give him some credit - if his best friend had gone missing, Wade probably would've done anything in his power to find him, including breaking and entering. Toshi, on the other hand, had no such excuse.
'Hawke is a friend. He's allowed in my room whether I'm there or not. You, on the other hand, have no privileges of this sort. And please don't give me the excuse of "I was only trying to find you", cuz that won't fly. We barely know each other, why would you try to find me? I know it's not out of the goodness of your heart' Wade crossed his arms.
The young man sighed when the future was mentioned. Were his efforts sufficient in changing fate itself? Who knew. One way or another, only time would tell.
'So if you know I wasn't myself at the time, why do you still accuse me of crimes I haven't committed? You know I didn't write that thing, so why would I have some grudge against you?'
Once the panty raids were mentioned, Wade merely looked to the side, refusing to comment. None of the people he knew had lost any underwear, but they weren't the only students in Yamaku... and if the pile of panties hidden in the box inside his Future Cave was any indication, Future Wade had been hard at work during those weeks.

Re: [PRIVATE] Delaying the Inevitable
He answered calmly and flatly.
"Again, I was only there for Hawke and Mizo's sake. You're right on that count; I wouldn't have cared myself if you hadn't shown up again.
"And I didn't accuse you of anything. Well, not you you.
To be fair, I wouldn't care to be associated with… him either.
"But it's a moot point now. He told me enough to know that even if that future is real somewhere, we're not on that track.
That poor girl… is dead. She passed not long after you left.
And us? We are not friends."

'Wait... That girl... You mean... Nayumi?' Wade asked silently, his gaze wandering down to his feet as the cogs in his head began turning. Of course, who else could he mean? Wade hadn't seen her in class since he returned, but he suspected that she was merely sick, or got held back a year because of her absences. Did she really... die? It seemed so abstract, knowing that someone you once interacted with was now gone. Wade wasn't particularly close to Nayumi, but he did strike up conversation with her a few times - or at least he tried to. He didn't care enough for her to mourn, but the shock was still there all the same.
'I didn't know that...' he sighed. 'But either way, it makes no difference. You can still go and meet Tachibana-sensei all the same, and then you can bring about that future my other self tried so hard to avoid. I mean, how do you even know that Nayumi's gone, anyway? Have you been talking to Tachibana or something?'

Re: [PRIVATE] Delaying the Inevitable
He nodded again, recalling the sudden silence on the other end of the line as he had relayed the same news before.
At the mention of Takeshi, he shook his head.
"No, I haven't met Tachibana. There was a notice in the paper."
As for how her death changes everything… he doesn't need to know.
"Besides, as far as I can tell, the only people who really know about what might have been… are me and you.
It's probably best if it stays that way; we take it to the grave. I know neither of us want to see anything like that.
So let's agree to do everyone a favor: I'll stay away from you, and you stay away from me."
He walked past Wade to the dorms, disappearing without another word.
