Dwight Haunkey
Before I begin, I'd just like to say that I'm not really used to forum role playing so I may stumble and screw things up to begin with and I apologize before hand. I read through a few other character sheets to try and get an idea of what's good and what isn't.
NAME: Dwight Haunkey
AGE: 17
CLASS: Junior
APPEARANCE: The profile image I have currently set is just a place holder for now, I will hand draw one at a later date even though I'm a terrible artist
Standing 5'10" (177cm), pale skin, and half dazed green eyes, Dwight can usually be found wearing his standard brown running shoes, blue jeans, black leather jacket, plain grey t-shirt, flat cap, and square framed black glasses. With sideburns and a soul patch, he keeps all of his hair no more than a few inches long. He has button sized scars on the front and back of his left shoulder. With his right hand usually kept in his jacket pocket, his left is in a permanent sling. Dwight has a tendency to slouch and shuffle along.
BACK STORY: I would like to play a more mysterious in the background type of character but I understand the admins need a character back story at least present to show that I'm actually semi serious about playing, hence the spoiler box. I ask other role players besides the approval committee not read it, but alas I have no way of enforcing this. Honour system, please
PERSONALITY:
Dwight has no genuine friends so much as simply people simply tolerating his presence. Not for anything really being wrong with him, but Dwight fails to grasp the native tongue and thus is unable to really relate to anyone. He speaks a foreign tongue that select few of the faculty are able to understand him enough to understand but conversations are still disjointed making Dwight feel ostracised. He's in the mechanics and electronic engineering programs, but with different course material in a language he can understand. He does some after class work at the school such as room cleaning and general teachers help in order to reduce the cost of his stay at the academy. Not being a person of wealth or even a citizen here really takes a toll on him, but you have to do what you have to do. This, as well as his standard course load of maths, sciences, and arts, makes for little casual time for Dwight. It isn't like he has anyone to spend it with any ways... Dwight is behind in his main studies due to dropping out but is ahead of his age group in mechanics and electrical engineering due to his personal pursuits.
Dwight is able to communicate on a very basic level through a full year of pantomiming with most students, but it only gets him so far. He's able to identify most nouns around the school such as textbook, pencil, and the like but not enough to be able to construct full sentences. Coming from a more traditional family, Dwight becomes uneasy around feminine men or masculine women.
Dwight dislikes crowds as he feels he does not belong, being linguistically alone. In the event he needs to be where there is a crowd, he generally sticks to the outer edges.
Because of his arm, any hand to hand fighting techniques Dwight learned no longer work without the use of both arms. Often being paranoid of his surroundings because of the neighbourhood he grew up in, Dwight never goes out without his folding pocket knife. Although he has a great interest in firearms, Dwight does not own any, be it because of his lack of license or lack of funds.

- Spoiler:
- Dwight comes from the city of Хабаровск (Pronounced Khabarovsk) and is son of Edgar (a local mechanic specialising in after-market and custom modifications) and Kamala (A loving housewife and mother above anything else. A fantastic cook, she often baked extra and sold various breads and sweets at a local farmers' market). The family of three wasn't swimming in money but they weren't exactly hard off either. They lived in a neighbourhood where you kept alert of your surroundings when you went out, but it was by no means a slum. Growing up here, Dwight more than once got in to a few bouts of fisticuffs and quickly became versed in street pugilism. Dwight was often targeted on the streets because he didn't have friends to walk with. The youth in his community were either much younger, older, or of a different background or already corrupt in their own way.
Dwight takes after his father with interests in all types of machinery from vehicles to firearms, and electronics from radios to phones to home theatre equipment. Out of these, his specialities are jeeps, tanks, and rifles for machinery and communication equipment for electronics. The standard high school curriculum bored him, causing him to drop out at 15 and pursue his interests in a way that funded him as well: he worked illegally for the same mechanic shop his father did, though his father was employed legally and was satisfied with Dwight's employment. He showed great potential and quickly has made a name for himself in a local terrorist force. They came to the shop often for their vehicle work and paid a little extra to keep all transactions just between them. Dwight didn't know much about the force except that none of their operations were on local soil. Everything they did was over the border in North Korea. Most of their requests were simple and non-immoral modifications such as reinforcing an axle (requires welding), replacing a small broken piece (rather than order a new one from a company and having it shipped, they'd often machine their own parts. This worked most of the time through reverse engineering but was never quite as nice as the real part), or upgrading and expanding (lift kits, off road shocks, larger fuel tanks, removal of upholstery in order to make room for storage, etc). Although firearms interested Dwight, he never mounted any to a vehicle, nor packed a vehicle with explosives. Any mods Dwight did are something that can be done to a civilian vehicle and still be legal on civilian roads.
During a small raid over the border, one of the terrorists was captured and interrogated. It was from this that the opposition learned of the mechanic shop that Dwight was working for. Being the terrorist's main source of parts and maintenance, it became a quick target for the opposition. A counter raid was soon executed. The shop all left trashed, ransacked, many set ablaze. Many of the employees killed, some captured. Dwight was among the captured but whether this made him lucky or not is debatable. God only knows what they had in store for him.
After a long, long drive and being thrown on to a boat docked on the Siberian border, they set off to the open waters where they wouldn't need to cross the border. Several minutes pass before the boat starts rocking violently. Hard waves? No, shells. Someone was firing on the ship. Dwight could hear the North Korean forces shouting to each other, but what they were saying was beyond him. Dwight listened for the shells and he noticed none of them were hitting vital points. Either their aggressor was a piss poor shot or weren't trying to sink the ship immediately. Could it be a rescue party?
Small arms fire could be heard. Possibly rifles or machine guns? They're not far off, the ship must be getting closer. Are they trying to board? It must be a rescue party, or possibly pirates. Do those still exist? The boat rocked again causing the poor knot binding Dwight's hands fall apart. He quickly moved to the door of the hold he and the two other captives were in. He was the only one left conscious. They were both adults, over 100 kilos each. There was no way he'd have be able to take them with him and still be able to effectively find an escape. Sorry, boys... He bolted out of the hold and ran topside. It was night and storming hard. Arms fire could be heard from both ships, the entire crew was focused on returning fire. Dwight was able to steal the one small life raft and head off in the opposite direction. He just about made it before one of the crew noticed the bright orange raft floating away. Dwight reached over the edge to paddle with his hands and get away quicker in a desperate attempt to flee. Luckily, the raft was not hit by the burst his captor had fired at him. However, his shoulder was. Dwight recoiled inwards. It had cleared through. This was not good, not good at all. He winced and rolled in pain in the raft before bringing himself to remove his shirt and tie a tourniquet and kept his arm lifted above his head. The blood dripped down his arm, around his ear. He didn't feel well at all and needed medical attention. He simply lay down in the raft and eventually passed out.
He had heard shouting as water splashed his face. Who it was, he didn't know. There were Asian people all around him. He was dizzy and pale. He knew not how long he was out. As he awoke, he tried to sit up but was forced back down. Still on a ship, he looked around. Sailors? Nets, the smell of sea creatures. Fishermen, then? He looked to his left to find a man with tweezers digging in his arm. Out of shock, he tried to pull his arm away but only to induce pain in himself. The bullet had smashed the bone in his small arm. Defeated, he lay there still dizzy. How much blood had he lost? How long has he been out? To what debt would he owe these men? He lay there and resumed his rest.
When he awoke a second time, the men spoke to him in an Asian tongue but it was unfamiliar to him. It... wasn't Korean, not hostile. He didn't know what to say or do. They tried speaking slower but Dwight simply shrugged. At least he tried before wincing in horrible pain. His left shoulder was stitched up and had the crudest of splints around it: Two sticks that you wouldn't let a dog chew on and rope. One of the men offered him a jar of pickled herring. He reached for it with both hands before wincing again. This was going to take serious getting used to. He took the jar in his right hand, set it down on the deck, held it with his feet and began eating with his good arm. He did small jobs that didn't require heavy lifting until they made it ashore. Being a massive language barrier and a shotty job, the fishermen let Dwight go after helping with some chores around the dock. Dwight hitch-hiked his way inland, not knowing or recognizing anything. He wondered where he was, it obviously wasn't Korea. Not understanding anything, rather than finding a hospital he decided to find an interpreter first. He searched high and low for anyone at all who could speak his tongue, even if it meant simply standing in the streets saying words until somebody approached him. After being fruitless, he'd hitch hike to the next city, getting weird looks everywhere he went with his arm hanging there not moving while his other one swung wildly with his pleading for help. People pointed and whispered but he had to carry on. He eventually found a town where people didn't seem to mind his arm. Curiouser and curiouser, Dwight became but still no one understood him here. People passed him by but... there's something different about these people... About everyone in fact. Before he could tell what exactly it was, someone simply approached him and spoke to him. Still failing to understand them, he simply stared vacantly. The person physically turned him, causing him to wince again, and pointed up the hill. A campus? Surely there's someone there who can understand him.

Re: Dwight Haunkey
Hey there, thanks for joining the forum! I'm afraid that the other admins and I are rather busy around the holidays, so it might take a little bit before we're able to take a look at your profile. Either way, as you may have noticed the forum's pretty much dead around this time of the year, so it doesn't really matter. We'll evaluate/approve your profile as soon as we can. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Re: Dwight Haunkey
I don't see any glaring issues with your profile, although I am in a good mood, so one of the other mods may say differently.
You have approval 1 of 2.

Re: Dwight Haunkey
I have a few concerns, actually. But firstly I'd like to apologise for the delay - we'd never usually leave it this long but Christmas hit me like a freight train this year. I hope you're still paying attention to this site - we always welcome a fresh face. We also have a profile guide to get people started - you mentioned you read through previous templates but that might be a bit more handy.
Firstly, the backstory starts off when the character is 15, with no mention of his previous life, parents, childhood friends, junior school or any of the important stuff like his interests growing up. We like to make a point of getting those down in a profile - we have a rule that you cannot simply pull information about a character's backstory out of nowhere. It MUST be in the backstory. For example, once we had a character who suddenly decided his dad was a welder which enabled him to cut open a door - nope. We need vital information like this. Flesh out his early life a bit, and then bump the thread.
Everything else is good, though. Just need to put in somewhere how long he's been at the academy.
Good luck.

Re: Dwight Haunkey
Heya, back again. Sorry for the long delay, I just entirely forgot about this board while tending to my other group.
I read through the guide Subverse linked and changed a few things. I didn't realise Japanese schools are only 3 years so I went with Junior, I added info about the parents which also lead me to adding that Dwight's uneasy around non-gender role stereotypical people, a little more about his childhood and environment. I may revise it again in the next couple days, as I've been staring at it and my own paperwork for several hours today and it's all just starting to blend together as a mess of letters.
