(Private) Band Step One: Human Resources

Post by Satoshi Veach on Tue Feb 26, 2013 3:43 am

*Click*

My phone locks after texting Hawke to get over to the Band Club room to meet Asterick.

While waiting for them I feel curiosity take me over as I look at the lone violin in the room.

I've always wanted to play a string instrument. Most specifically the violin. I wonder...

It takes me just a couple seconds after picking it up to realize that it wont ever.

EVER.

Allow me to play it well so I just set it down like a new born and go to the set. An instrument I'm much more used to.

After pulling out my sticks I figure I should play something to pass the time until they get here.

A voice breaches the silent air in the room. Silent so only I myself would understand it even if someone were in the room.

"Haven't played Nikopol in a while. This should feel great."

It's one of the songs I get really fired up with.

The laptop already on, I go over to a music website I use and turn it on loud enough for me to hear at least a little while I play.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME-4xP5ch8o

As the music starts my mood suddenly spikes. A wide smile appears on my face. It doesn't look friendly even though it is emotionless (Unless you count fired up as an emotion.)

It's a song I've wanted to learn by heart ever since before I started playing the drum set so it isn't a problem to play at all anymore some years later.

I still can't sing along without messing up due to it's heavy beat, though. Something I love to do.

Asterick walks in hearing the violin, has his satchel on shoulder and pushes open the door, "Sup Satoshi? So why'd you invite me here again?"

Hawke had been tailing the unknown figure across the campus, not to be weird just cause they were going the same way. Pretty quickly he realised it was Asterick; nobody else had been around the campus.

He followed Asterick through the door and answered the question "I think that may be because of me. Hi there, I'm Hawke, Tiberius Hawke." He stuck his hand out and gave himself a mental pat on the shoulder for using the line he'd been dying to use since watching his first Bond film.

Why did Hawks just sound like James Bond for a moment there?

Never mind-never mind!

"Hawke here has a proposition for you, Asterick."

I begin to play the drum set part to love song because it's more simple and allows conversation to be held around still. (Just in case you're wondering, no. I can't stop playing an instrument when it's right in front of me. Like ever.)

Gee, thanks Satoshi. Put me on the spot why don't you!

"Um, hi, Asterick right? Satoshi and I were playing a few tunes the other day, and we had the great idea of starting a band; Satoshi informs me you rap a lot and I wanted to ask if you would possibly like to be in on this whole shabang?" He grins hopefully.

Put like I expected. It's better for him to be the one explaining since he's most qualified in anything music out of the both of us.

"What do you think, man? We are also thinking if Yuriko is good as with the electric guitar style as she is with acoustic than we'll ask her as well."

Best let him know important information like that.

Asterick looks at Satoshi, he gives him the holy shit look, "He would be correct, actually just recorded a song today for my mixtape coming up", he smiles and puts his bag on the table, "What kind of music would we be doing? I haven't heard either of your guy's styles so I'm curious here".

"Hmmm...A good mixture of all three of our styles would be something...liiiike...."

The tip of my pointer finger touches between my lips.

"...Have you heard of Jeff Williams before? Made the music for Red VS Blue."

Even about half a decade after they finished the series it is still in record as the longest internet series ever made so there is a chance Asterick knows it even if he is Japanese.

"Here."

My phone comes out and I go to my music where I have most of the music from the 6th season up. A song very familiar to me comes on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGSK6xADRNM

"Of course there will be songs where one of us is left out. If it's a soft guitar piece, if it's strictly rap, if it's a more passionate piece. Really just depends on what we all come up with."

Asterick listens and mumbles a little freestyle over it, "Damn, that'd be some interesting shit. So you guys know what kind of style I pull off so we can make this work not-awkwardly", he pulls out his phone and plays one of his songs;

https://soundcloud.com/anonymousarias/superkawaiichances

"It's obviously rap but I would say that's how I usually do my shit. But yeah, man", he looks at the two, "I'm in".

"Asterick, I liked that song. You recorded it yourself? It's backing track is beautiful... and you have got some nice flow going on there. I think we'd make a tidy little group here. All we need is Yuri... I'm beginning to think this girl is imaginary Satoshi!" Hawke says with a wink.

Well, I'm finally playing music again. This feels good.

I role my eyes at Tiberius before explaining.

"She was that girl who was fensing in the gym a while back. I ended up taking her on and we ended in stalemate with one broken sword and both disarmed."

"She knows guitar and I thought we could use her."

I laugh at their jesters, "Y'know what this reminds me of? The American band Rage Against the Machine. We have the rock band but the rapper as the vocals, it's quite an interesting mix. One of my personal favourite bands though, for sure".

Asterick laughs and gives Tiberius a high five, "Hell yeah, man. Cool band I grew up on as a kid,", he smiles a little at the memories of gaming to their music, "But wait... Yuri? Oh, the one you fenced in the gym that one time, she plays guitar?"

"Yeah, man. I had help from her recording a piece I wrote with a Spanish flair to it. Her skill with a guitar is pretty good and her guitar itself is just as impressive. She may come from a rolling family but I you need to know music to have as good of taste as she had when she got it."

I lean to the side on the piano and scoot the laptop around, load a file on the recording program, and play it.

It's the piece I recorded with her. Starting with a quick strum and then run on the guitar before a quick suspended cymbal and leading into a castanet/concert bass drum part. The part repeats again with the guitar part added in a melodic way but this time with a staccato finish.

The song continues while I speak (more to myself than anyone).

*E*"When she rehearses, she' got mad skills, man-eh tell yah."

I turn to look at the two new band members.

*J* "So that's who you guys are dealing with. Now all that's left to deal with is to see if she's got the electric style down."

My attention refocuses on Hawke.

"Hey, Bear. Sorry if I'm asking a little much but if she isn't used to the style and doesn't have one of her own man, you think you could hook a girl up for a guitar to practice on? Doesn't have to be anything special, can be a spare if you have one."

"Alright-alright, sweet."

I don't know why but that style of guitar seems like it'd be a perfect fit. Just suits her look, I guess.

Asterick listens and digests what he heard as the two talk, this is gonna be interesting for sure, he thinks to himself.

"So when's first band practice?", he says, smiling while looking at the both of them.

*E* "BITCH-ERM BERN RDY!"

I do my best impression of a thick louisiana accent and than quickly realize my friend is British and my other friend not only hardly understands English but probably never heard that accent before.

Lookin' like a friggen idiot? Check! Woo!

I don't really care anyway.

Gotta think of a popular song they might know including rap, guitar/bass, and drums-or-piano, normal vocals, and rap...hmmm...

"Round One-by Williams?"

That's not too popular at all!

"Wont Back Down?"

Not exactly sure how much Asterick would like that with the way the lyrics are.

Then a good one hits me. Christopher re-jammed this one in my skull by being the first person, not only who I know knows the lyrics, but actually SANG it with me.

"Hit The Road, Jack-by Mr.Ray Charles, man!"

Eeeeh...Asterick probably doesn't know that song. It's not rap but it doesn't need much vocal range what-so-ever if you sing Charle's part.

Hawke begins to play the melody on his bass, giving it quite a funky vibe and adding a few reggae elements to it, with a lot of syncopated notes in between the already present notes. He fiddles with the amp a bit and jacks the bass right up, filling the room with a laid back rendition of the popular song.

"Lets try and make our own version, just playing a song how it is gets a bit boring." He suggests.

"Damn-straight!"

I slide back around on the stool to face the piano.

Instead of solely playing the original part I try to fit my part with Hawke's. Adding a note up an octave through some of the pauses between the lower notes. Instead of heavy staccato my playing is more legato on the keys. Holding my fingers on them for a little longer than the original song calls for. Repeating it.

"Know the song, Asterick?!"

The noise level in the room is increased so I need to raise my voice a little.
