Standing on my Own Two Feet

Post by Sayuri Motozaki on Mon Apr 15, 2013 11:34 pm

Sayuri has stood up from her wheelchair a number of times since she came to Yamaku. She has even taken a couple of steps, though her weakened legs have invariably given way. However, this has now given Sayuri an idea. Perhaps, through repeated practice and exercise, she can strengthen her crippled limbs and allow herself to walk properly again. It's a longshot, but it's worth a try. I can't spend the rest of my days in this infernal chair.

Sayuri positions her wheelchair in her dorm room so that it is approximately five steps from where she is sitting to the wall she is facing. Five steps. You can manage five steps. Come on, Sayuri. You can do it.

Slowly Sayuri stands up from her wheelchair, and as usual her legs begin to tremble as they attempt to support her weight. Come on. Hold on. Sayuri takes a step forward. Her leg buckles slightly as the other lifts off the ground but she remains upright, and as she places her foot down again the weight is relieved and her leg returns to normal.

Sayuri takes another step. Again there is no problem. However, the moment she raises her leg to take the third step, the other leg buckles and collapses beneath her weight, sending her sprawling onto her hands and knees. Her long black hair falls forward over her face, and she brushes it out of her eyes. Come on, Sayuri. Still three steps to go.

She attempts to get back up again, but her long black dress gets caught up in her legs and she is sent sprawling again, this time landing flat on her face. Her dress is also torn at the knee. Already the physical exertion is taking its toll on Sayuri and she is breathing heavily. Regardless, she hitches her dress up past her knees with one hand, and with the other she slowly and shakily pushes herself back onto her feet, crouching for a moment before extending her legs with a mammoth effort and standing back up. Her crippled thighs are screaming in pain but Sayuri ignores them, gritting her teeth. Three more steps.

Sayuri is so focused that she has not considered all the noise she made as she fell over. Certainly she will have attracted some attention, as she did in her previous attempts to escape the confines of her wheelchair. However, Sayuri pays no attention to this as she prepares to take her third step.

(Chris, seen stumbling by the hall leading to the girls dormitories in an attempt to locate his sister, hears repeated thumping sounds coming from one of the dorm rooms. Remembering what happened last time he assisted the late Hitomi, he contemplates knocking on the door to the room where the sounds are coming from. He decides to help anyway, with the belief that he won't make the same mistake he made with Hitomi. He starts with calling through the door.) Excuse me, sir or madam, are you in need of assistance? {Man, I sound like a cop right now...}

"No. I'm fine."

Sayuri lifts her foot to take another step, and again her leg buckles and crumples beneath her. She quickly places her other foot back down again but this leg too crumples beneath her, sending her tumbling to the floor for the third time, this time rolling forwards and landing on her back, her feet resting against the wall. Well...I made it to the other side of the room, at least.

Sumiko walks through the corridors on her way to the Library. She see a familiar figure in the distance. Upon getting close it's Chris talking
'are you in need of assistance?'
"Senpai! W-What are you doing here?"
She rushes over and stands by his side

(Chris turns to address a concerned looking Sumiko.) Hey, sweetie. Don't worry, I'm only here because I wanted to go check up on my sister. Would you happen to know the girl that's staying in this room?

She looks at the door number
"...."
She tries to remember who lived here then finally remember
"This is Motozaki -san's room!"
Sumiko knocks on the door twice
"Motozaki-san...A-are you okay?" She looks at Chirs whispering
"Did something happen?"

I thought I heard thumping sounds coming from her room. She could be in peril, but I'm not sure... (Chris begins nervously fiddling with his hair.)

"Nakagawa-san?" What are all these people doing outside my dorm room? Wait...I guess I must have made a lot of noise, falling over all those times. Darn it.

Sayuri attempts to roll over onto her stomach, as if intending to crawl and drag herself back towards her wheelchair, but she finds that she cannot move herself without the searing pain in her legs becoming unbearable. She heaves a massive sigh and closes her eyes. "I...guess I could use some help."

The muffled sound of Sumiko's voice enters the room
"Okay... S-Senapi stay here please!"
Sumiko opens the door but not fully. She squeezes her way in and closes the door behind her. Seeing Sayuri on the floor she hurries to her aid.
"I-I'm going to pick you up. are you ready?"
This is going to be difficult

"Okay." This is, what, the third time I've been in this scenario? I'm almost getting used to it...oh God, that's a horrible thought.

With her only arm Sumiko tries her best at picking up Sayuri and is successful sort of.
Her timid strength was just enough to support Sayuri
"One step at a time Motozaki-san"
I don't want to let her go but I'm not strong enough to support her

Sayuri nods determinedly. "One step at a time." Slowly, with Sumiko supporting her, she makes her way back to her wheelchair, face now contorted in agony.

Well...I made some progress. Like Sumiko said, one step at a time. But for now... Sayuri decided to address the searing pain in her legs. "Well...I guess I could use some painkillers...or something."

"You would happen to have any in your room would you?"
Sumiko looks back at the door

An idea pops into Sumiko's head
"Motozaki-san would it be okay if Chris-senapi looked after you while I go out and get the painkillers? He just outside, please?"

Chris-senpai? Sayuri racks her brains to think where she may have known this student from, before remembering he is Rachel's brother. "Of course." Sounds trustworthy enough.

"I-I'll be back" She knocks on the door
"Motozaki-san, Chris-senpai is coming in!"
She leaves in a rush out the dorm building

(Chris enters Motozoki's room and awaits to receive her permission to sit down to make himself more comfortable.) Good afternoon, ma'am. I promise not to be a nuisance to you much longer.

(Chris finds it difficult to fight the urge to analyze every nook of Sayuri's room, but go to face Sayuri again.) I think this is the first time we've spoken like this, Ms. Motozaki. How have you been?
