[Open] The changing of the guard

Post by Kara Rifkin on Tue Jun 25, 2013 3:55 pm

No matter where you are in the world, all libraries smell wonderful. The very essence of wonder fills the air as it seeps from these corridors lined with knowledge. The temptation to just sit and engross myself into one of them is very enticing. But alas, I have duties to attend to, this is a job after all. The orientation from a very grateful teacher was anything but extensive, however I'm sure I will manage to figure everything out as I go along. The first order of business is something I'm sure I'll be doing quite often, which is emptying the return box and returning the books to their place among the shelves. As I stood back up from underneath the counter I encountered a student looking to make an addition to the pile of books in my hands, who seemed quite surprised to see me, understandably so seeing as I wouldn't have been the person this student was expecting to see.

Yuuji walks the hallway to the library to return a few books recommended to him by a few classmate. it did not take him long to read the four books he had picked but they were all a good read. with both crutches under his right arm he enter the library Seeing someone new at the counter. Making his way around, he places the four books on the counter.
"I'm here to return theses books."
Who is this person? He thought to himself
New librarian or just a temporary replacement?
Though it did not matter much you meet new people every day.

Straight to business I see. Although, I don't know why I was expecting a greeting, if I was in his place I would probably act the same. Hopefully my accent isn't too bad.

"Thank you.  I can take those."

After I take the books off his hand and set them next to the other pile I have to sort through, I think maybe getting off on the right foot with the people I'll be seeing often is a good idea.

"Were they any good?"

Yuuji nods as he reaches for his other crutch
"They were."
He clears his throat and bows
"I forgot to introduce myself Takahashi, Yuuji. Nice to meet you."

It takes my mind a moment to make sense of this student's spoken message, but the bow was obvious and something which I immediately repeated while I thought of a response of my own.

"It is pleasure to meet you well as. My name is Kara Rifkin, I'm going to working here and if you read much, we'll probably seeing eachother often."

"You just started here?"
He says with curious look. Yuuji was interested. First day on the job for Kara also that she was not a local here, more of a foreigner then anything else.
He sets his crutches to the side and leans over: ears open.

While I'm not really accustomed to being the one listened to in a conversation, I saw no alternative to the situation but to give him something to listen to.

"Yes. I moved here just recently, and I'm hoping to stay around for a while. and as you can probably tell, I'm foreign from here well as. But on the bright flank, if you ever need help with your english, you can always ask me. From what I can say, this job is not very demanding. So I should have the time to assist you. That is, if you wished it."

"You can help me with my English?"
He says looking kind of stunned. Yuuji stands on his leg and shakes off and nervousness and doubt he has on what he is going to say.
"Okay, I have been trying to get a certain sentence correct but I'm not sure if I got it yet."
He takes a deep breath and speaks in a broken English
*E* "My lof. I has been trying to tell you tat I want to go to te park once more time."
He smiles thinking he was correct: flawless.

"That was fairly well, but it could use a bit of work. Alright, how about we begin off with some of the pronounciations. Firstly when you say my affection, or *E* My Love* you should try for a backwards 'Ve' rather than a backwards 'Fu'. Secondly, when you say *E* The* and *E*That* remember, it's while the same movement as 'te' but instead of contacting top of your mouth, you contact your teeth. Try saying, *E* The love*. Attempt not to rush these letters, they are supposed to be gentler."

He nods his head listening to her advice. Taking small notes in his mind
"okay so it's pronounced like this *E* the* and That* right?
He tries it a few more times and speaks again
"And love how do you  do that again?"

"You had most of it early, it just is the end which is variation. It much is like the beginning of the letter 'Fu' but pressed stronger against your lip and more slower. And if you are having trouble pronouncing the sound trying to say *E* Love* you may try saying first, *viva* a numeral of times to get a feel for the letter."

Again he nods and gets a small practice in
*E* Fifa...Vifa... ViiFa"
He grunts in frustration
"No, I can do this..."
Yuuji tries a few more times but fails
*E* Fiva... Fiva...VIFA..." *J* "okay I give up."
Throwing his hands in the air he sits down on the seat nearest to him

It's kind of sad to see him lose hope when he was so close. Perhaps if I remind him of the purpose of this, he will be able to revive his resolve.

"May I ask why is it you want to say this sentence in english?"

He looks up at her and sighs
"I wanted to say this to someone....'special' to me. Since This person's kin is an American, technically, I wanted to impress."
Yuuji tries once more
*E* Vifa....FIVA" *J* "Yea can't do it..."

"I think that 'someone special' will appreciate your attempts, good or bad. Worst set occurrence, she finds it funny or cute. Love is fairly strong word, and something says me that you have known eachother long time.  I think you should keep on practice and when the time arrives, just go with what feels right."

After doing what I can to ease the pressure this student has seemed to put upon himself, I begin sorting out the pile I've been neglecting this entire time.

"You know I'm American also?"

Yuuji slightly surprised, sits up straight in his seat, and gets an idea

His request takes me off guard at first but the temptation to revisit a long lost hobby convinces me to abandon my current workload, atleast for the time being.

"Yes, no problem."

I walk around the counter and hand the student his crutches to then prompt him to lead the way.

After being handed the crutches and standing up, Yuuji leads Kara to the Corner of the Library.
"Have you played before?"
Yuuji has not played much but he knew what he was doing at an intermediate level

The instant I see the board, I feel a wave of nostalgia come over me. Followed by a miniscule sting of longing for my home. I miss it, without a doubt, but there's alot here that I appreciate as well.

Only once? he thought to himself
"Was your father good at the game?"
Yuuji takes the black pieces and offers Kara the white pieces. Everything is set and Yuuji waits for Kara to make her move

"He and brother were the people only that I ever played against, but from what I could say. Yes he is well."

I haven't played in a while, and the only strategy that I can remember at the moment is pretty standard, but it should do quite nicely for a relaxed game.
