The Big Gloom Empty The Big Gloom

Post by Nicholas H - Dazai Fri Jul 19, 2013 12:10 am

I was filled with the vastness of the universe and therefore the emptiness of all the universe, of hollow matter and dead-consciousness. The life of an automaton draped in human cloth.

The setting sun bore down rays of the ninth circle, ferocious in its intention to sear the Earth. I walked through them, unfazed, taking swigs from a water bottle. Reality and mirage interchangeable... People looked like blurred masquerades of themselves, a Mardi Gras of modern day apparitions, a horrific vanity beneath the exterior.

I walked with my eyes drifting along with them. I couldn't tell if I were distancing from them or themselves from me. Absorbed in thought, the frequent call of my name is off in the foggy distance of the muggy, Lynchian-style direction of the day.

The Big Gloom Empty Re: The Big Gloom

Post by Izumi Inaba Fri Jul 19, 2013 6:47 am

There was a haze, the length of a southern plantation and with the heat of several Arab springs bearing relentlessly down upon those of whom are unfortunately found on the crust of the earth. The space between felt hollow, yet Izumi regarded it not. His world was the outside world. The world exterior, in which he would so like to play and contour to his wishes. This dream-scape world was his sandbox in which he had some control over himself, away from the regiments of droning souls pining for true existence and escape from this plane lies a single boy, awry, out of place.

Unlike the other quantity of strange and unfortunate machinations he was vivid enough to spot. His questioning manner had almost removed the haze from among the others. Almost, was the correct terminology, for there is much too strong a shroud for normal men to conquer, much less a single nondescript boy. Upon further inspection, it was the look of a boy he spotted much before. A classmate perhaps? Izumi tried to guess who it would be, assumptions are terrible form but there is no choice but to from here. The organized marching of the crowd in front was too much to bear to walk through. They were heading south and he north, an unfortunate collision with these inscrutable people are bound to occur and he wanted none of that. He decided upon the name of a classmate he knows exists but is unknown to the rest. The name was that of Nicholas, which meant "Victory of the People", even if there was none to be found here. Izumi found the name quite strange for one who seems to drift alone. He called it out a few times to see if there would be any motion that would seem to show signs of a reply, or gesture.

No answer.

Perhaps he too, was as dead as those around him. The boy continued to walk on glancing at people left and right, perhaps checking for signs of life as well. Izumi decided to call out once more before deciding against furthering this venture. If he had continued on any more, he risked worrying the shells of men and women into a frenzy of misguided assistance. No more, he would rest the decision on that last note.

The Big Gloom Empty Re: The Big Gloom

Post by Nicholas H - Dazai Fri Jul 19, 2013 11:35 am

I stare through the mist to see a familiar red-haired youth approaching, calling to me, and I immediately run through the ghosts toward the living. Spectres voiced moans and exclamations of surprise and irritation; I took hold of his arm and began pulling him across the street into the shade and safety of the alleys.

"Huff...huff....ha... Now, I can understand the plight of poor Meursault in L'estranger;the unrelenting sun can bring up the dregs of absurdity in anyone...yes, even on the eyes and mind."

I turn to you and bow.

"Inaba Izumi-san, if I am not correct?"

Izumi looks up at him warily, not in a form that shows any signs of suspicion but one of pure fatigue. Temperatures had recently risen to infernal amounts in japan. One could hardly fathom that this would be standard fare no more than ten years ago. Being dragged into the alley would have raised red flags in Izumi any other day, however on this day, his half aware mind had just barely grasped the concept of what was being done here. The shade is a most noble shadow, for only when the light is overbearing does the shade become gray. Everything was not black and white, there was a gray to be found if you seek it. Izumi replied curtly, yet with a tinge of aloofness.

"That is I. About the heat, it seems it has rendered me almost ineffective. I very much like being outside away from stuffy confines and constraining walls. Unfortunately it seems the sun's offensive against all humankind and their freedoms has begun. You are one of the Dazai's yes? Nice to meet you, it's not often I find a fellow student out here in my walks."

"Quite. I am. I'm Nicholas."

I nod and begin edging my way through the shadows of the alleyways.

"We'll find a cooler place to stay until the sun slackens. There are a variety of small establishments that can host youth like us in these backalleys. My apologies for the sudden intrusion on your walk."

"No,no, I believe it was I who impeded progress on your walk. However, it didn't seem as if you were actually enjoying it. You were among drones after all. What establishments do you know of?"

Izumi follows suit and treads softly through the alleyways wary of his surroundings all the while.

"I know of quite a few. There's a quaint little indoor cafe that is rarely full. They serve good tea and cakes there. ...I...you are right in that assumption. Quite right..."

" The shanghai correct, this I know of. I would quite like that. I take it we will be off then".

Izumi cut to the point, as any more time spent here would add on to his suspicion. He never did trust the alleyways. The shade was akin to a godless shrine, only a fool would sacrifice his safety within it's darkness for longer than he needed. It wasn't Nicholas that made him wary, only the surroundings made him so. Darkness, like if one was blind.

Izumi's thoughts led him to begin walking. Neither the light nor the dark would comfort him if he lingered. He was at least more mindful than those androids walking in mindless arrays of mediocrities. How droll it would be to be them. He was no better and no worse. He only had a mind.

I swerve to the left and out into the sun after shutting my mouth. The Shanghai now in view, we make our way down the hot block and into the breezy vacant area of the Shanghai dining area.

"Hello? Is anyone in?"

A sound is heard from inside, there does indeed seem to have a person up about in this very quaint cafe. However, it does not seem as if any progress is being made besides the knowledge.

"I hear some movement, I am sure someone's about." Izumi looks about as he speaks, finding a trace of motion but little else.

In a few minutes ,a waitress arrives and seats us near the windows. I order a carrot cake with some soy milk. The atmosphere was calming and had a sense of the old-fashioned and organic, both of which I respected and liked about it. I get lost in thought as Izumi takes his order; I feel as if dues between generations were being fulfilled.

There was a strange feeling permeating in the air, as if they already knew each other much longer than they have. Izumi orders a standard strawberry shortcake. Nothing too fancy, it had some frilly white frosting around the edges in a feeble attempt to save it from the mundane. It also had a very large strawberry, probably strawberry preserve from the looks of it. Nonetheless, it was something he hasn't had in quite a while and he takes solace in an old favorite. It wasn't often he'd be found eating such things. Alongside it was a cup of green tea, it had just enough milk in it to satisfy Izumi's palette. Not much after he takes a swift sip of his tea, he turns his attention to a very pensive Nicholas, who seems lost in a world of his own making.

"How's space, can you count the stars for me?" Izumi states jokingly. He smiles in the same manner his father used to, a very welcoming calm curve. It seemed all too familiar.

I snap out of my thought trance and turn to you.

"Sorry...I just daydreamed off about a bond that is being realized once more. My father...."

I blink twice and shake my head.

"Never mind. Quite a feminine taste on your behalf with the frills and such but I admit I have a soft spot for strawberry delicacies."

My cake arrives with the cup of soy milk and start to dig in as well.

"I actually am not fond of the frills. I'd rather they just give the cake to me straight without any of this extra ornament. Just the strawberry and the cake would be quite enough thank you. I haven't had something like this for around ten years." Izumi retorted without much defense. He didn't need to defend himself over a small comment. Cake was cake regardless of how it was dressed. As long as it was quality, which this one was so it ultimately was of no matter.

"What do you usually think of when you're in that state? You seem to be the pensive type."

"Yet you continue to fall into that state. Verily, it is quite unfortunate to constantly have to deal with such trifles. Distortion of all sorts from all mediums. Do you find comfort in any one thing. Notice I didn't say escape, I trust you be a stronger young man than to have to escape. Comfort, Nicholas, if I may use your first name is what I am trying to gauge."

"I don't mean most of time but it's quite awful to think on nothingness. I find comfort...."

My mind flashes to Chika and I put my head in down for a bit.

"Nothing. Everything is bare and vacant. Though....I enjoy my music. That's my gift.... I find comfort in...well, she's abhors me now."

"She... I will not pry unless you offer the knowledge. I am only a person you met by chance, which by the same chance goes to school with you."

Izumi stays calm but halts his smile.

"A void, bare and vacant is what remains. Much like the faces of those back in the streets." Izumi takes a bite of the cake solemnly. "What music do you play, what sound specifically. Perhaps we shall move from this point."
