I Have A Weird Inquiry

Post by Riye Asano on Tue Sep 03, 2013 2:08 am

I'm trying to change up my style of writing to something different. Has anyone ever seen Requiem for a Dream? I'm trying to emulate those camera shots and angles in writing. Any advice on how to go about that?

Well I just watched the trailer, and I can't really help you, seems like a good movie though.

It's on Netflix?! European or American? (Don't actually know where you're from, Chiharu.)

I had no idea netflix is different depending on where you're from. Kinda makes sense I guess.
'murica btw.

wouldn't it have been easier just to have checked it yourself?

This must be an elaborate scheme of yours to stalk me.

You saw through my ruse!

Naw, I kid. I have both because I'm crafty, but it's a bit irritating to switch to the American one and I was hoping to skip a load of the hassle. But I'm ok 'cause it's on Europe! Razz

For a while I had a hard time getting my brain to stop being all discomboobulated from that movie. Turns out ponies solved my problems yet again.

So, after a nice rest, here is my answer to your question.

The answer can be found in the title, a song for dead dreams. The movie consistently plays with the idea of mental jumps through presenting snapshots of a person's experience rather than fleshing out the scene to try and explain it. Much like a dream, where each second is unique and only barely connected to the one before, yet when you try to remember it your mind creates explanations for how these seconds are connected because it felt like a single experience, often creating the illusion that the dream was longer than it truely was. I think if you are trying to recreate this feeling in writing, try to make strong, powerful, short, and somewhat disconnected statements to create a personal mental image. Basically you're trying the lull the mind of the reader to create it's own image but have that image be the one you want it to be. For through the corralled originality you can get a greater sense of empathy.

That's my advice.

No idea if it helped or just made it more confusing.

Terra, you are a saint. Thank you. I got the gist of it. Terse but powerful lines, quick impressions rather than vivid, crystal clear scenes, a bit of unreliable narrator and usage of the cut up technique that Burroughs uses... Stream of consciousness too but in fragments rather than a full stream....

Thank you and I'm glad you all enjoy the movie!
