Sora Kimura Empty Sora Kimura

After re-reading this thing at least a dozen times and still not yet having shed my self-consciousness I get about every character sheet I make, here it is.

NAME: Sora Kimura
AGE: 15
CLASS: Freshman

APPEARANCE: He is a bit thin, has straight brown hair, and has green eyes that are often only half-open. He has white sneakers and will wear appropriate legwear for the weather, (pants in cold weather and shorts in warm weather) but will just about always wear a long-sleeved shirt to make his missing right forearm less obvious. His left hand is usually in a pocket.
(I apologize for my avatar showing his hair covering his left eye and him wearing earbuds, both minor inaccuracies, but I made my appearance before finding a picture and honestly couldn't find anything more fitting.)

BACKSTORY: As a young child, Sora grew closer to his mom than his dad due to his dad's inconvenient work hours. He worked until late in the day, and saw his son for a few hours a day before going to bed. This remained consistent through Sora's middle school years, where it was also found that he wasn't incredibly social. It was mostly due to him being the kind of person to let others come to him rather than going to them. Others had little reason to come to him, so he made few friends, and the few that he did make didn't end up very close. It's hard to say whether he didn't get close due to enjoying solitary activity, or if he came to enjoy solitary activity due to not getting close, or if both effects fed into each other. In any case, he enjoyed an occasional relaxed walk, video games, and often drawing in his free time. Drawing was something he did fairly often, but not something he took all that seriously. He usually thought of it as just something to fill the time, and so didn't join an art club or anything. His lack of many friends could also be attributed to him not taking enough interest in much of anything to join an extracurricular activity.
One night, Sora's dad came back from working and decided to cook something up for himself. He left it on the stove while he went to watch TV. During this, Sora and his mom both went to bed, and his dad, tired after work, fell asleep on the couch. It was out of luck that Sora's mom woke up to the already developing house fire, and promptly got Sora's dad and Sora himself up to get out. The fire had already spread considerably, and things here and there were already falling apart. His dad was the first out and to call the fire department, while his mom was in front of Sora on their way out of the house. Sora's extension of his right arm wasn't really a conscious decision. To him, it was more out of impulse or instinct, but subconsciously it was because he saw his Mom as a provider of comfort during a stressful or panicked time, and there were few things more stressful or panicking than the inferno around him. So stressful, it seemed, that the ceiling couldn't take it. Something came down hard on Sora's extended arm, but through blinds of pain and shocked surprise, he didn't see what it was. He still prioritized getting through the door over finding out what hit him, as well. It was once he was out that his severely injured arm was noticed.
It was his third day in the hospital that he was given bad news. The area around and above his right wrist had been shattered, and said area could never heal close to properly. The effect could be described as something of a mental adrenaline; rather than trying to take in the shock and pain of what he was just told, his mind decided to numb the reaction so that he didn't have to deal with it. Rather than shocked rage or denial, he continued to lay down and wait for time to pass. What else could he do? Angering himself was an inherently bad thing to do, and denying it wouldn't change anything. His determination to pass time without thought to anything resulted in him not doing much else for a good while.
He still spent a good while in the hospital after the amputation, of course. He was near-always alone, which he thought was OK. He was used to solitude, after all. However, the lack of friends to talk to, and that his parents couldn't be there all the time meant that he was even more alone than he was used to, and so didn't get much social interaction. The only other people there were the doctors, and something was bothersome about them. They tried to seem friendly, yes, but Sora knew and couldn't help but keep in mind that it is only their job to be friendly. They have no intention of developing personal relationship, friendship, and so Sora did not value conversation with them. He'd often be letting his mind wander to other subjects entirely unrelated to what he was talking about. His face often did not reflect what he was thinking, since he still had the thought in his head that they didn't intend to develop personal relationship, so he wouldn't let them.
He eventually accepted that he couldn't lay down and do nothing with his time. There were no video games, and the hospital wasn't an incredibly interesting place to walk around in, so he decided to try his (remaining) hand at drawing again. Problem was, he's right-handed. He had never used his left hand in drawing or writing except to see out of curiousity how deformed his letters would be upon trying to write with his left. His attempted tree proved just as deformed, and after two more drawings he quickly found that witnessing his own artistic incompetence was frustrating him horribly. He decided not to draw, to keep from frustrating himself any further. At the back of his mind, he knows he will eventually have to write again. At the back of his mind, he knows he doesn't want to give up on art entirely, and that he will eventually try at it again whether it's good for him to do so or not. For the time, however, he had little to do but think about his situation, how he felt about it, etc. He's grown used to just thinking, to an extent at which he is probably content if he just has something to think about.
He's taken the news that he will be attending Yamaku pretty calmly. As mentioned earlier, he never made any close friends, so not seeing the friends he did have isn't all that tragic to him. Sora just looks at the idea of going to a school with disabled classmates as interesting, to a mildly exciting extent, rather than insulting or bothersome.

PERSONALITY: He usually keeps a blank face. This is sometimes deliberate, to people he doesn't consider a friend, but is often out of habit. However, one can still vaguely figure things out. There are, of course, involuntary reactions like crying or blushing. More commonly, one can tell something by looking at his eyes, should one learn of the habit. They are often half-closed, which shows that he is not paying much attention to what he's saying and his mind is in other places or is nowhere at all. If for some reason he drops everything else to stop and think about something, his eyes are closed. If something takes his interest enough that he is actually paying attention to what he's doing, his eyes are fully open. Due to usually not paying much attention to the conversation, he will sometimes miss subtler conveyance or things that might be implied through tone of voice. He refuses to call this a flaw, and instead thinks it little more than a unique trait that he personally does not take much interest in talking. He takes a mild interest in art, but is reluctant to draw, himself.

Put in few words, he is distant, generally isn't paying attention, and has an interest in art.

Parts of Sora (partial oblivion to conversational social cues, often blank expression, a common lack of interest in what he's doing) were inspiration by Rin, and other parts (artistic interest, green eyes, missing arm) were coincidental similarity.
