[Private] The Trek to Hussfell Green

Post by Eric Grimm on Tue Sep 10, 2013 1:03 am

In the northernmost reaches of Faywyn, Eric Grimm and his motley crew of bandits, warlocks and beasts - living and dead - trek through the snowy mountains on the border of Vjalldaskar. Their destination? Castle Hussfell, the place where Eric's quest had started. The mountains provide them cover from the Faywyn scouts, even if it adds a very long time to their journey.

His band consisted of the damned and the depraved of Faywyn - those downtrodden by the throne, left to rot in the tiny villages and the sprawling city slums. Every single one of them had a story to tell of how the King had ruined their lives - some were crippled by taxes, some were maimed in the King's various wars, some were just extremist radicals with no place else to go. One thing they all had in common though - a hatred of the Royal Family.

All except one. The Faywish Princess Serena. She had been kidnapped by Eric in the dead of night on the same day the King was assassinated - almost two months ago. The trek from there had been long and hard, travelling through moors and swamps, fiery mountains and deep caves. Along the way Eric had been amassing an army. A large one. The group stretched out behind them for almost three miles, and that didn't include the supply train. At the head of the group Eric and the princess share a veiled wagon pulled along by a great shaggy mountain yak.

"We are but a day from my castle, Princess." Eric says with a grotesque smile, showing off his black gums and pointed yellow teeth, glaring at her with eyes of jet black. "Our journey will finally be over."

Princess Serena sat in the corner of the wagon, as far from the evil necromancer as she could. At first, when she had been kidnapped, she had feared the man. She had tried to escape once, but had twisted her ankle and was easily recaptured. Her ankle had slowly healed, no thanks to the constant rattling of the wagon she was in, but she had not tried to escape again. She knew it would not be that easy. Her fear had instead turned to loathing and bitterness, and quiet determination.

The princess was tall and slim, beautiful and elegant, yet the long, rough journey had taken its toll on her appearance. Her long ebony hair was tangled, the light gone from her crimson eyes, her beautiful blue dress dirty and tattered. The heel of one of her shoes had broken off; perhaps the cause of the twisted ankle that had foiled her escape attempt.

As Eric spoke she did not look up at him. She did not want to see his face. "Good." she snarled. "I can't take much longer in this stupid wagon." As if on cue, the wagon went over a bump, jolting its occupants. Serena let out a sigh. The day couldn't pass soon enough.

"Temper, temper, princess." Eric says, then breaks into a wheezy cackle.

He licks his lips with his fat, red tongue, and continues, "But first, I have heard rumours of another large rebel army nearby... We're making a detour into the valley to find them."

At this moment the wagon comes to a stop, and a scarred face appears at the door.

"Lord Grimm, sir, we're approaching the valley."

"Excellent." Grimm says with a malicious grin, "Princess, I would like you to accompany me." He says, and gestures towards the flap to the wagon where two armed guards are waiting to escort them.

Well, it's fresh air, and a chance to stretch my legs. Better than being stuck in this wagon. "Certainly." Without waiting for Eric, Serena exits the wagon through the flap, stepping out onto terra firma with some element of grace still intact. Ladies first.

Eric clambers towards the opening in the canvas flap, ignoring the burning pain of his bones as he moved.

One of the guards holds out his arm to assist his descent. Once in the bright sunlight Eric squints his eyes and lifts his woolen cloak over his head to shade his eyes from the majority of the sunlight.

The leader of the infamous "Grimm Krewe" has an uninspiring appearance, a thin, emaciated form with pallid, grey flesh hanging off brittle bones can be usually seen dressed in a long black robe, not dissimilar to the ones you would see a monk wearing, tied around the middle with a crimson sash. His mouth is a thin gash, with thin pointed teeth and black gums. His eyes are sunken, with black irises. If you were to be sitting around the campfires at night, one of the hot topics of conversation is the subject of Eric's body odor - a stench that smells of a 3-day old battlefield, full of blood and rotting meat. You wouldn't catch them saying it to his face though, as his punishments were always... effective.

"Princess," He begins, hissing out the last syllable, "Would you help an old man walk?" He says, grinning maliciously.

"I don't suppose I have a choice," sighs the princess. She offers her arm for Eric to use to steady himself.

"Very kind of you, Princess." Eric says, and begins to descend towards the valley.

Behind them a choice retinue of guards follow, mostly living.

As they reach the valley floor, a rather pleasing scene caught their eyes.

A village that had recently been under attack.

"It would seem your intel was correct, captain." Eric says, a smile visible in the dark recesses of his hood.

The group treks to the village, passing burned corn fields and struggling peasants attempting to fix the damage done to their homes. As they draw closer, they are spotted by a young man with a bandage around his head, who immediately begins to cry to the rest of the villagers.

"They're back for more! To arms!" He calls, while charging... alone. He slows his momentum as he realises the rest of the villagers have given up and would just let raiders get on with it.

"What do you want this time?" The villagers asked, displaying a prominent country accent.

"To eradicate the vile poison that is the royal family." Eric replies calmly.

"We've 'erd this all affore!" Another villager calls out, and various other shout cries of agreement. "We already gave you our ahnswer!"

"Really? From who?" Eric asks, intrigued.

"From you! the last time ye and yer army were 'ere not two days passed!" The villager that charged them answered, with a slightly confused tone to his voice. The rest of the village had started to gather around, attracted to the noise.

"'Twas not I." Eric replied. "Which way did this mystery army go?" He asked.

"O'er yonder..." One of the villagers says, pointing towards the other side of the valley.

One of the bolder villagers steps forwards and studies Serena. "Say... that's the princess! Yer the kidnapper! there's a bounty on yer head!" He cries.

"News seems to travel fast..." Eric says to his captain, who nods and draws his sword. "Best nip this in the bud, eh?" Eric says to Serena and begins walking back to the caravan.

Behind them the song of steel can be heard as the guards set about covering the leakage of information.

Serena is clearly startled by the sudden bloodshed. "My...my father's subjects..." She has no choice, however, but to go with Eric back to the caravan. Her fists clench and unclench, and the hatred of her captor continues to well inside her, but she says or does nothing more, simply accompanying Eric back to the convoy in silence.

Back at the caravan, Eric and Serena are inside the wagon once more.

Eric lets out a whistle and they begin moving, and Eric lays back on the cushions.

"We shall be reaching my castle soon, princess." He says, while eating something that appears to have a lot of legs. Legs that are still moving. "I shall then set about locating this other army... who seems to be like minded."

Serena does not respond. She has nothing more to say to this evil man. She seems to nod slightly in recognition although this may just be the continued jolting of the wagon.

Eric nods at her silence and leans back to let the swaying of the wagon distract him.

A day later the army arrives at hussfell green - a towering gothic castle complete with the decaying turrets.

Eric and Serena find themselves in what was once the great hall of the castle, attended by Eric's most-trusted captain - a figure dressed head-to-toe in black armor, inlaid with crimson patterns. The captain is commanded to send groups of riders to the nearby villages to spread the word - find this other army and send them to the castle. The plan was to inform as many villages as possible and hope that one of them sends the army his way.

The pair are left on their own in the vast hall.

"I hope my humble abode pleases you." Eric says from beneath his hood.

"It's not as bad as I was expecting." remarks Serena. "Certainly preferable to the wagon."

Now that she is faced with the reality of staying here for a while, Serena's mind begins to race. Realistically, there's only one of two things he can choose to do with me now that we're here...lock me in some cold dungeon like a prisoner, or force me to sleep in his quarters like some mistress. I really don't know which one I'd prefer, though neither of them sound very appealing. Then again... An idea begins to form in Serena's mind. If he does let me stay in his room, I'll probably have the run of the whole castle, which will make it that much easier to escape...provided I can find a solid escape route, and form an escape plan. "Say...if I'm right in assuming I'm going to be stuck here for a while, would you at least mind giving me the grand tour?" It's worth a shot...

A low hum penetrates the still air, and Eric's hand reaches up to his chin.

"A stroll around the castle would be good for me, I suppose." Eric begins, appearing to be genuinely serious, "but then again, it would also give you an opportunity to study the various passageways." He says, finishing with a rather bored tone to his voice and turning to rest his eyes on the princess with an amused smirk.

"Nice try." He says, "But I'm not as stupid as your father."

'Nice try...' Well, it was certainly worth a shot. Guess he's not as stupid as he looks. 'But I'm not as stupid as your father.' At this Serena cannot contain her anger and her fists clench. "How dare you speak ill of my father, the King!" she exclaims.

[I'm assuming that at this point she doesn't know her father got deaded...]

A raspy chuckle.

"Oh, quite. No man was as clever as your father, Serena." Eric says in a mocking tone, "I have no respect for the King, he grew richer while the poor grew poorer." Eric spits, suddenly getting angry.

"He never saw it coming, the arrogant bastard, sat on his high throne in his huge castle. He didn't care about the little people, oh no. Not until we showed him. He underestimated us, he did. The power of the little people." Spittle flies out of Eric's mouth as he rages, his voice growing more and more strained and animalistic, while also growing deeper. "We showed him with our civil war. If it wasn't for that disaster at this very cast-..." He stops, breathing heavily.

"I'll speak how I want in my own castle." He finishes solemnly, hands gripping the arms of his chair until the knuckles turned white.

"You're beginning to irritate me, girl." Eric says from beneath the hood, "It would be best for you if you didn't irritate me."

He slowly turns his head, "You may have royal blood but it is spilled just as easily as any other blood."

The hood slips down, revealing his pale and wrinkled flesh, "As evidenced by your father."

"YOU'RE LYING!"

Abandoning all sense, Serena turns are runs. She is not headed for an exit, or anywhere in particular; she is merely headed as far away from the evil man and his lies as she possibly can.

At the shout, two guardsmen appear and block the only exit to the hall.

Eric shakes his head, and lets out a sigh. "Take her to her cell." He says.

The cell in question was a dismal affair - barely 3 meters wide and only a few meters tall, with a wooden bucket and some straw. It was cold too - being in the basement of a ruined castle on a snowy mountain.

"I'm sure she'll lose her attitude there."
