Standing on my Own Two Feet

Sayuri has stood up from her wheelchair a number of times since she came to Yamaku. She has even taken a couple of steps, though her weakened legs have invariably given way. However, this has now given Sayuri an idea. Perhaps, through repeated practice and exercise, she can strengthen her crippled limbs and allow herself to walk properly again. It's a longshot, but it's worth a try. I can't spend the rest of my days in this infernal chair.

Sayuri positions her wheelchair in her dorm room so that it is approximately five steps from where she is sitting to the wall she is facing. Five steps. You can manage five steps. Come on, Sayuri. You can do it.

Slowly Sayuri stands up from her wheelchair, and as usual her legs begin to tremble as they attempt to support her weight. Come on. Hold on. Sayuri takes a step forward. Her leg buckles slightly as the other lifts off the ground but she remains upright, and as she places her foot down again the weight is relieved and her leg returns to normal.

Sayuri takes another step. Again there is no problem. However, the moment she raises her leg to take the third step, the other leg buckles and collapses beneath her weight, sending her sprawling onto her hands and knees. Her long black hair falls forward over her face, and she brushes it out of her eyes. Come on, Sayuri. Still three steps to go.

She attempts to get back up again, but her long black dress gets caught up in her legs and she is sent sprawling again, this time landing flat on her face. Her dress is also torn at the knee. Already the physical exertion is taking its toll on Sayuri and she is breathing heavily. Regardless, she hitches her dress up past her knees with one hand, and with the other she slowly and shakily pushes herself back onto her feet, crouching for a moment before extending her legs with a mammoth effort and standing back up. Her crippled thighs are screaming in pain but Sayuri ignores them, gritting her teeth. Three more steps.

Sayuri is so focused that she has not considered all the noise she made as she fell over. Certainly she will have attracted some attention, as she did in her previous attempts to escape the confines of her wheelchair. However, Sayuri pays no attention to this as she prepares to take her third step.
