After the strange mess that was the incident earlier, it was time to return to business. The reason for there having two stations were that they were established specifically for the gender identity of the student being examined. There was a probable issue for those who refused to identify with either one of these for whatever reason or if they had changed gender however in the current student records there were no such students. There was little reason then to facilitate a third station. If there even were, Demser would have given him a note or an E-mail detailing such, at least in line with his duties if not by obviousness. The latter would merely be due to the fact he would definitely need to know this.

After sterilizing the tools and his own self, Declan called the next student in with much haste. This day was a long one and would be drawn out. It was best just to have little down period for each student. It would break his concentration if he had to take a break in-between. He was now poised to begin as he rummaged through the file of the next student. The specialized test was to check the student's depth perception. For whatever reason Inaba's degeneration was east-west and not north-south like usual blindness incurred with heterochromia. Tunnel vision would be the first signs of total loss of sight and he'd have to test for this. He closed the file and looked warily at the opening anticipating the student's arrival.

Upon heeding the call toward the station Izumi opened the blinder and entered without much wasted motion. The best way to get this over with would be simply just to follow procedure and speak when spoken to. A simple platitude and a nod of the head was the only sign of life emitted from the teen as he sat. "Good morning." That was really just all, he wasn't truly looking forward to this, much like the others but also didn't seem to mind the inevitable. It was simply a task to complete.

Declan now completely aware and awake had already read through the paperwork in it's relative entirety. He was about to ask the incoming student to sit down except the student already had done so. He moved on with his mental pre-defined script to regurgitate. "Good morning, now there are two parts to this exam, one contains the normal routine check up and the other contains the more specialized exam which deals with your specific underlying condition. At the end you will also be subject to a full body exam, be assured however that you should expect this to be completed forthwith without any strange deviations." He then took a glance at his questionnaire and found that there weren't generally any specific questions to ask. To Declan, deciding to ask too many students how their summers went would probably be seen as flaky. He decided this time to stick to the task at hand.

"Any questions about what this entails? If not, we'll just be getting to the exam, there's a long day ahead for us all."

Izumi deliberated for a moment on whether or not to even have a question answered. He did have a vested interest in what the specialized exam would entail yet it came to him that it may put him at a great unease. At this point he recanted the very thought and simply stated, "I have no questions." This seemed a bit unlike him yet he clearly just wanted this over with quickly.

"If that is all then, I'll just ask you to kindly hold your arm out" Declan then reached for the blood pressure monitor in what would be the second of many such stretches. Having wrapped Inaba's arm properly, the process set out to begin. The band clamped down upon the arm in order to retard the blood flow for just a few moments. This was to properly gauge the amount of pressure that the blood was under when it gradually rose. After which it rose and then sent forth the results for analysis. Quite the healthy pulse as it was much lower than he expected from his base assumption. In contrast however, the blood pressure appeared to be slightly lower than normal.

"Sixty-three pulse, 116/76 blood pressure. Not bad, just a slightly lower blood pressure than normal. You've probably not been up for long, it's morning after all. Since I've found not much wrong, we'll be taking a few blood tests now." Declan then sanitized his hands and sought out a new pair of gloves. Secondly, he took a count of the remaining vials and took two more being assured that he won't run out as the day wears on. Having remembered the correct order of procedure this time, he wrapped Izumi's arm with a band, sanitized the area and sought the vain. It took a while to find as Inaba's vain was the jumping sort, the most irksome to work with as more caution was required from the practitioner and more stillness from the patient. "Please stay very still for me as I insert this needle, otherwise it will hurt more than it ever should." After some deliberation and a small sigh of relief, the blood poured forth gently into the vials he placed to collect and the whole process ended smoothly. If Inaba was more of a child, he'd had probably told him how good of a job he was doing. After the cleanup, Declan begun detailing the following test.

"We'll be taking the eye examinations now before the full body examinations as this is what is detailed for your specialized exam. There will be a few standard exams as well a few made specifically for your condition." Declan pointed back toward the Snellen chart for this station placed quite a distance away from where they were as he was set to begin.

The calamity. I really have to face this so soon, yet it is inexorable, completely inexorable. Izumi kept a neutral gaze by the skin of his teeth as his resolve began to deplete as he heard this. He warily cast his gaze toward the charts by the back of the room. Given no meaning, they were just panels in which an exam lies, filled with letters in an obnoxious font that derive an arbitrary number that assigns the level of one's sight. Given meaning however, they become tools to fuel one's nightmares of total and complete nihility. Izumi took a deep breath in the attempt to ward off such mundane and deceptive thoughts. He would still continue to exist through other means and at least had a chance of life through his condition. This fact could not be said for every student here. His problems existed sure, but there were worse and none could be done for them as much as little could be done for himself. He exhaled and allowed the cloud of thought to roll by with little effect.

"E, F, P, T, O; Z, L, P, E, D..."

As of then, he didn't have much issues with the distance; not yet anyways. Especially since the chart is at the center of his glare. This exercise was to him of the most pointless and futile exams and served to increase his sense of dread.

"... P, E, C, F, D; E, D, F, C, Z, P..." Izumi paused and for the first time realized that even his acuity had begun to falter as well. He reached the end of the 5/6 line and couldn't read the 6/6 line. He spoke not a word but just took his gaze off and stared at the ground for a moment realizing he couldn't progress farther.

[The metric system would have it in terms of meters, not feet. The 6/6 line is the same as the 20/20 line.]

Declan recorded the results as soon as he was able. Afterwards, he turned toward Inaba to direct him to face the second chart. Inaba however looked quite despondent as he peered at the ground. The student glared at the ground with such intensity it would almost appear as if he wanted to ask it a question to soothe him. Declan paused in order to leave him be for a moment or two. This was also to formulate a decent sentence that remained tactful. After a few short intervals, it would appear as if he would not budge, still appearing solely vexed. Declan begun to speak in the hopes that he can at least bring himself to progress. "Inaba, the result isn't favorable, I understand, but we must finish the exam, there are many others who are needing to complete their exams. I know no amount of preparation would suffice when the day arrives, but it hasn't yet. It's not to be taken for granted. You are bright, you are more than able to understand that. In my homeland, a quotation oft passed around is that, "A friend's eye is a good mirror". I mean to tell you the truth, these exams are to invoke the truth of one's condition in order to understand what should be done. Life keeps on, and the beauty within can still be experienced. The imagination is often times a greater eye than any. Let's move on shall we, yes?"

Declan once again with a more gentle motion toward the second chart attempts to direct Inaba toward completing the exam.

Izumi took a sharp look upon the ground attempting to gauge what had occurred and internalize it. He had not an issue gauging distances before the exam, at least not in a way that was greatly noticeable. When he sat by the tree to assist Kimura with his art, he was able to even bring a decent image of the tree into the forefront of his mind, doubtless he was able to see that. Yet, this result was completely contradictory and proof of the decline's ultimate will. It cared not for past results nor prior ability, it only served to denigrate. Without warning, the silent assassin worked its vile poison into the retina. Within the iris where the vanity lied also was home to the den of the obscure. That of which served to seal his future where only entropy stood in the hall of ocular oblivion. He was snapped from his thoughts and took in Declan's words just in time to hear the message. There is only forward now, he should move on. At least for now, twas' too difficult to steel one's resolve so quickly as if it was not a care to worry of. The mind was an old adversary, taking the simple and forcing it into complexity just for the sake of maintaining status quo. Izumi peered up at the enamel board placed adjacent to the one which he just failed. A sneer and a sigh raised him from his estate and allowed him a reply.

"Yes, in the interest of time and effort if not progress shall we continue. It wouldn't be fair to allow insecurity to abstain progression for soothing relief. Onward."

An idle gaze was cast upon the student for a moment before Declan was assured that for the time-being, another episode such as this would be averted. He then assigned the stipulations of the exam in much more vague terms to speed up the process. "You've been through this exam before, simply follow the signs and remember that you'll need your opposite hand for some of them." Declan gathered his clipboard to write down his observations and gave some time for Inaba to proceed.

Izumi took his time on each line making sure that at the least an error by his own hand wouldn't skew the results unfavorably. He tried to defy any other route to failure so that little other result but the right one would present itself. Once again, he trips over a line he never has before, on this occurrence however he just accepted it and moved on.

"I can't go further than the fifth line." he states flatly as he peers back toward an already recording Declan who in his observation was already aware of this. Izumi was grateful that Declan was expedient. Very analgesic in his manner of efficiency, yet very astute in the manner of handling situations such as what occurred not too long ago. It came to an understanding that perhaps he indeed wasn't lying when he mentions professionalism. He kept eyes only on the task, a very welcome circumstance. Izumi returns his gaze to his immediate front, awaiting further instructions.

Declan gathered a flashlight from the counter and flickered it off and on to assure the fact that it is in proper order. He then instructed Inaba to follow the light and when the light crossed out of sight, it appeared that it brought much difficulty to Inaba to follow it. It wasn't that he was completely incapable of following or that he went in another direction than where it was going, he was simply lost when it swayed out of his field of view and took a while to follow again. This confirmed the fact that the issue was indeed his perception of depth and peripheral vision. He then instructed Inaba to follow his finger around and an even result occurred. He wrote this down and took out a small paper with a circle on it, this would be used in the next test.

"This is a fairly simple test and the first of four. What I will be having you do is to take a finger, most preferably your index finger and hold it toward the circle. Focus your eyes on the circle. You should see the circle clearly in the middle between two images of your finger. The finger(s) will appear semi-transparent and slightly blurry. This is normal for this exercise. Next, you shall focus on your finger and check to see whether the image of the circle divides in two whilst your finger is back in full sight. Lastly, I would like you to look at the image whilst still holding your finger out toward it with one eye closed. Your finger should appear to the same side of the eye you have covered. Do this for both eyes. Tell me what you see and if you arrive at any difficulties. This is a preliminary test in order to understand the extent of this issue."

Inaba, Izumi, Medical Examination. [Private.] Empty Re: Inaba, Izumi, Medical Examination. [Private.]

Post by Izumi Inaba Wed Oct 09, 2013 4:21 am

A wide array of difficulty in what appeared to be simple at heart was what was met when Izumi attempted the test. First, it appeared as if his finger completely disappeared from sight and then it appeared as if there were several fingers and no circle at all. The entire charade appeared as if the nurse learned about some new psychedelic form of holistic medicine from the journal of a mangy hippie who lost his way at Bonnaroo. Izumi, ever the skeptic - looked back at the nurse as if he wanted to redact every single thought he just had of him if it wasn't for the fact that he did indeed have a problem. This subsided as the onlooking nurse simply directed him to proceed if possible. Izumi focused in again this time focusing solely on the fingertips. With much effort he eventually got a clear view of finally being able to see the correct image just before the Nurse spoke a word to tell him to halt.

After this he attempted to complete the second request, in which more difficulties were had as he begun to cup his right eye with a well placed palm. This time he had appeared to lose sight of his finger and upon regaining the image, lost the circle. Visible signs of stress started to make their way through as his body language begun to look quite dismayed. Yet, he carried on until he got the best image he could muster to report: a half visible finger inclined to his left. Thereafter he attempted with his left, which gave him less problems and one and a half minute less of apparent struggle. An even result was returned as approximately half of his finger could be seen to the right of the circle. He then turned toward the nurse, using that to signal his completion, as he became quite silent.

Inaba, Izumi, Medical Examination. [Private.] Empty Re: Inaba, Izumi, Medical Examination. [Private.]

Post by Declan Carrick Fri Oct 11, 2013 10:16 am

Declan pulled an apparatus which was poised in position just barely over Inaba. The refractor had been in relative disuse which was perhaps why it looked so new. Most of the students that were blind were either legally so or completely blind. A Vectographic Nearpoint Card replaced the card which contained the circle. The test was relatively quick as the results were equivalent for the tests which were all showing that the horizontal x-axis of Inaba's eyes were degenerating. The reports of the close-range acuity test were negative on the z, positive on the x and negative on the y-axis respectively. In all three, it was found that at the ranges of 2, 3 and 4.5 meters that Inaba reported little issue seeing the symbols unless he was told to look to the sides. Closing the cylinders in sequential order to repeat the test on each individual eye showcased that both eyes were equally affected, neither better nor worse than the other. The third was to focus on the central point, and to define what the edges looked like and whether or not any of the other symbols, which were no longer hidden on the card could be seen. Each time, only partial reports of the other plus symbols could be seen, whilst the ones to the direct sides of the center of the test were completely obfuscated. The forth was expunged as there was quite enough to go on for the moment that seemed to get the same results.

"I do not have reason to believe further eye tests will provide much of any variance. We'll be moving on to the full body examination and then you'll be on your way. Within a few days I may call you back in to see what can be done but for now, this will do." Declan dictated this somberly as he always felt a lump in his throat when a person looked as helpless as how Inaba was glaring back at him. Memories of that time he couldn't save Morgan, the reason he works with others now was to try to prevent fates. Declan simply decided to clear his thoughts by exhaling and went to seek out a garb to pass to Izumi to put on once he unclothed. Hopefully, he wished no-one else would render haunting memories unto him by mere chance today.

There was a strange feeling around the sudden hastening however Izumi minded it not. He was just glad that what he felt was more tortuous was over. The following was simply a matter of protocol. He undressed with little hitch and put on the garb. To him, the following is merely the beginning of the end. The nurse was just its envoy. There was no shame in facts, just truth and that was what was given to him, unabated.

After seeing that Inaba was prepared, he asked Inaba to tilt his head and stretch out his neck. No issue was found through the range of motion test and no discomfort was reported. He took a few steps toward him to be able to check upon his thyroid area and found very little wrong with the size of it. The lymph nodes were also found to be in almost pristine condition. He went toward the cranial nerves and found that while there were a few veins that got in the way initially, after getting Inaba to relieve his tension, he was able to inspect and find that whilst there was a strange feeling around the area, it was more due to tension than much else. The possible dataset that could be arrived from his facial expressions however wasn't so skewed. The breath analyzer tool and its subsequent test followed as he went to make sure the system reset and that all was in working order. Keeping his eyes on the meter and once again using his stethoscope to check his lungs and heart, a much higher than the average recording of lung power was observed. Perhaps due in part to an active lifestyle.

He then stood him up to go through the scoliosis test and found that there were no issues to be found. He returned to his front, toward the neck once more but this time toward the arteries. He placed the stethoscope toward both major arteries to register the pulse. After which he asked him to lay down in order to press down on the points of the abdomen to examine the quadrants of the regions, and their condition. He measured the length of the quadrants and found that the two upper quadrants were slightly longer than the bottom two but more in part due to how he was shaped and less so than with any real issues. Pressing down upon the abdomen showed no signs of discomfort.

Testing for reflexes on each individual limb, it was found that his left side reacted quicker than the right side limbs and his legs faster than his two arms. This was noted down. Toward the end of the exam, Declan remembered that he must ask each student for a certain test to be made, which could be declined. "Well, lad you've been through enough. There were outliers on both ends. The good is that you've very good cardiovascular health and further bad in terms of strange reflex results. There's one more test, and you probably know what it is. This one however is decidable. You can decline and be let free however the pelvic exam is of equal importance to what we have learned here today. Very preventable problems can be found and dealt with. However, this is a touchy area and it has been mandated that this be optional. If undertaken, there will not be any strange actions other than the ones I must undertake. If at any point you feel too uncomfortable to proceed, you may tell me and you can be set free."

After the entire exam, Izumi wanted nothing more but to leave. "I shall not partake in the final exam, I simply wish to make my departure." He then promptly and abruptly clothed himself and awaited permission to leave. He didn't feel strange about what was asked of him, he merely wanted to return to what he felt was freedom, away from medical items and reminders. He just wanted to live out what else he could and felt that staying here even more would just hinder him.

Declan made a motion with his right arm as if he was wishing to say "after you" after holding a phantom door open. "You may leave then." After Inaba's departure, Declan cleaned his workstation, removed his gloves and rearranged the station back to function. He had to call someone up in the next few minutes and there was already a delay. Declan walked across the back and returned to the second station, where the local PA was and began his preparations, staring down a list of names written in katagana.
