[Open] Disconnected

Having unpacked all of her clothes, set up her computer, and already opened a bottle of orange soda in anticipation of having a homework free night, Jun found out she had no internet connection.

She let out a long breath, grabbed her soda, notebook, and phone, and made her way outside to then realize, she had no idea where the office building is. Luckily enough though, someone is walking by. So she writes down a quick message while holding the bottle under her arm and then waves the student over.

Indeed I am walking by, a notebook in my hand with a pencil in its spiraled spine. It's been quite some time since I last attempted drawing, but I'm in good enough a mood that I feel like I could deal with the frustration. I thought a more serene setting would further help. However, something else has caught my attention.
I don't believe I've seen this girl before. The student body here is smaller than most schools', so that could actually mean something, but it's easily possible is that I've simply seen her and not paid enough attention to remember.
After a few moments' delay, I realize that these thoughts are quite likely unimportant, and make my way to the girl.

She Holds her small note book which has become quite thin with use out for him to read. Her handwriting is very legible and efficient despite being obviously rushed.
[Can you show me where the office building is?]

My eyes widen from their usual half-closed state to open as they should be, as being shown writing in place of speech is unexpected. Is she mute or deaf or some other thing? My eyelids return to their usual position as I find myself between attention and thought.
Again, the thought gives me pause before I nod and say "Sure." I am given further pause by that I have to actively try remembering where the building is, as I don't usually have reason to go there, and, combined with my somewhat imperfect memory, struggle slightly to figure its location. The struggle is indeed only slight, though, as I do remember, and begin walking to said office building.
As asking a question now wouldn't cause delay, and I lack the tact to know if said question is intrusive, I decide there's little reason not to ask:
"Why did you write to me instead of talking?"

Jun wrote down, [I'm mute], and showed it to him while looking over the rims of her glasses to give Sora a look that could easily be her way of saying, 'Seriously...'

Apparently oblivious to what her expression might be meant to convey, I read the written message and nod.
I thought so.
There isn't another explanation, really. I guess I just wanted to make sure? I'm questioning my own motives behind asking the question now...
Regardless, I find it interesting somehow. The muteness. Not much to do with that particular thought, but there it is.

There's no way he knows sign... eh, might as well check
After a short moment of just walking, Jun taps Sora on the shoulder to get his attention and then points to him before spinning her index fingers up and over each other while looking at him with raised eyebrows.
{Do you sign?}

Preceding my question with some reasoning this time, I guess that she's probably attempting sign language.
"I don't know sign language, if that's what you're doing."
This reminds me of the time at library that I was looking at the braille books, finding it frustrating that information right in front of me was beyond my use.
It's just about as annoying now as it was then. Not that it's any fault of her's, of course.

After a bit of silence and a return to walking, (assuming Jun doesn't make any contribution of her own to conversation) I ask "Why do you need to go to the office building?"

She slows down for a moment as she writes her response and then hands the notebook to Sora.
[I need the passcode to access the internet. Do you know it?]

I somewhat awkwardly try to fit the notebook being handed to me in the same left hand as the notebook I came out here with, as the lower half of my right sleeve remains noticeably empty, and thus unable to let me carry two things at once more easily.
"I have it written down, but not memorized." I respond as I hand the notebook back. We're nearing the office building now anyway; it wouldn't save any time to go to my dorm instead.

As they reached the Office building, rather than writing it out, Jun walked backwards towards the door for just long enough to mouth the words, Thank you, before turning around and entering the building.

"You're welcome." I respond before thinking something along the lines of Is that it?
It makes sense for that to be it; all she needed was to get to the office building, and now she has. Perhaps I was expecting a bit more conversation? I guess there wasn't really figurative room for any.

So I turn and start walking back to my originally planned destination.

Toshiaki stepped out of the gym, his dark hair slightly wet. He cracked open his cherry soda and took a sip, feeling the cool evening air.

Nap, workout, and a shower, good as new. What now?
Well, I could go see if Mizo or Hawke want to do anything. Or try to meet some more people. The other freshmen should all be moved in by this point too.
Might as well enjoy the evenings now. Probably won't have so much free time once classes start up.

He noticed the two on the other side of the quad, in front of the administration offices. He leaned back against the wall while he enjoyed his soda, watching as the girl entered the building and the boy turned back towards the quad.

I can't help but notice somebody watching me as I take my leave. I'm not bothered by it, but I stop and make eye contact nonetheless.

Toshiaki, having finished his soda, walked down the steps to the courtyard.

"How's it goin'?" he said to the other, nodding in greeting.

"Fine." I say, unintentionally leaving little room for response.

Toshiaki, unlike most, wasn't troubled by a silent break in conversation. Although he supposed that might be true of more than the average at Yamaku.

He crumpled his empty can in his hand, the thin metal giving way under his firm grip. Spotting a recycling bin in the corner of the courtyard, he launched his projectile. It sailed in a smooth arc for several meters, landing squarely in the bin with a hollow clink.

I watch the can fly before returning my gaze to this person that approached me, wondering if he will explain why he did so.

Toshiaki clasped his hands over the back of his neck, stretching and raising his gaze toward the sky.

"Springtime sure is nice out here in the country," he remarked. "Big difference from being in the city all the time, don't you think?"

Apparently not. I suppose that's fine.
"I wouldn't know. I've never lived in a big city. I guess the spring is nice, though, even if I prefer autumn."

Toshiaki grinned. "Yeah, I'm more of an autumn guy too. But compared to being in the middle of Tōkyō, springtime out here's pretty nice. First spring evening I've had away from the city in a looong time."

"I always thought cities and Tokyo and stuff seemed noisy and crowded and annoying, but it was also always just an assumption. Was it a good one?" I ask.

"Yeah, pretty much," he replied. "But you learn to deal with it after a while. Besides, it's a lot of fun. Always stuff going on, all the big concerts and everything… Never a dull moment, that's for sure. But it can get to be tiring."

Toshi unclasped his hands, placing them in his jacket pockets. "I guess you don't get down to Sendai much? I figured most people might, being as we're so close."

(I'll assume Sendai is "The City" subforum location)

"I went there twice to visit Mizo when he was in the hospital. Otherwise, no, I don't really go there."

{Yeah, the setting in KS is supposed to be outside Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.}

"Ah, you know Mizo? He helped me out when I got in this morning. Seems like a good guy."

"I'm Toshiaki, by the way. Toshiaki Endō," he said, bowing his head slightly.
