[Private] Can't Cure Crazy
'Alright, first of all, I'd like to let you know that I'm perfectly aware of how this looks, but I assure you, there's a very reasonable explanation!' Wade spoke from the chair opposite of Dr. Schmidt. He wasn't lying, of course - he knew he wasn't crazy. It was just that he had crazy things happening to him. First was that whole reality shift where he suddenly found himself in a new world with a new family and memories that didn't match reality - the shock had been so big that the other guy this happened to had killed himself shortly thereafter, which wasn't very amusing to Wade. But just as he had settled down and actually grown to care for his new family, especially for his little niece who appeared to adore him, a consciousness from the future had to take over his body and make him go AWOL for months. Wade ended up waking up naked in a fountain with no memory of the time he spent being controlled by someone else, with only a note nearby explaining the situation to him. After his return, things hadn't exactly been exactly been easy for him - his sister decided to limit his interactions with Ellie, his father stuck him living with the single most annoying living thing on the planet, and all of his friends started looking at him like he was utterly and completely mad. Hawke and Chiharu - the people he considered to be closest to him, aside from his family - barely even talked to him, and when they did it was always awkward, like they knew something he didn't. Everyone else just whispered behind his back - "Look, there's the dude who went crazy and was missing for a week", "Did you hear how they found him? So embarrassing!", "If I was him, I wouldn't be able to live with myself - I'd have just killed myself!". And now, to top it all off, Wade was being considered as a potential transfer to Yamaku's school for mentally disabled kids, where he was inevitably going to be placed in a class with drooling, lobotomized retards. And none of it for any fault of his own! In any case, the decision about his transfer fell to the man in front of him - Dr. Julius Schmidt, the school's psychologist. Where Wade spent his senior year in high school depended on which box a single man checked. As such, he was going to try his hardest to make the best impression possible.
'Look, the thing is... It's all been very stressful for me' the young man began speaking again. "I mean, my score was the lowest in the school, and one of my best friends recently killed himself... I just needed to get away from it all, so I did. It's really as simple as that. I'm sorry that it turned out the way it did, I just wasn't really thinking straight. But I'm not crazy, obviously!'

Julius sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
What the hell have I gotten myself into…
"Be that as it may, Mr. Wilson, you still have to abide by the law and the student conduct code if you wish to continue here at Yamaku. Failing the previous year's examinations, followed by months of absence, is not helping your case.
"If this environment is hindering you from meeting your responsibilities as a student, then you would be better provided by moving to a more conducive environment.
"But that's for later. For now, let's start again, from the top. And I would much prefer to hear what really went on."

'Oh, yeah, because an environment of autistic kids and schizophrenics is just gonna be so productive for my development, huh?' Wade sighed, crossing his arms and leaning back into the chair. 'Look, I already told you what happened - I just needed to get away from it all. Try something new. So I lived on the streets for a while, away from everyone and everything. It was fun, but I'm not trying it again any time soon. Can I go now?'

Re: [Private] Can't Cure Crazy
I would not throw around the term "schizophrenic" so lightly in your situation.
"Of course you can. You're not under arrest.
However, I don't expect the administration will welcome you back if you do leave."
He walked to the door and opened it, looking flatly back at Wade.
"Your choice."

Wade sighed deeply, closing his eyes and leaning his head against the backrest of the chair. 'Look, what do you want from me?' he spoke from this position. 'I've already told you the truth. I'm not crazy, I just did something stupid'

He shut the door and walked back to his chair.
"Mr. Wilson… you have reached an impasse. You've run out of extra chances. It's quite remarkable they've even let you stay on this long.
"The fact is, unless you start showing serious improvement, you will not be allowed to attend Yamaku Academy for your final year. So, either you can refuse, and leave; or you can cooperate, and I'll do what I can to argue your case.
"Do you really want to stay?"

'Dude, are you kidding? My family's here! The few friends who actually give a shit about me are here. I finally managed to get the hang of Japanese. And now you're asking me if I want to stay here? Of course I want to! Not counting recent events, this school's the best thing that's ever happened to me!' Wade leaned forward. 'Look, Mr. Schmidt, let me make one thing perfectly clear - I'm not going to retard school, okay? If I can't keep studying in Yamaku, I'm just going to move back to Toronto with my mom. It's gonna be a bitch to pull off, but I'll do it. However, I don't want to go back if I can help it. So just... Tell me what I gotta do!'

"Very well. I believe you.
It is my hope as well that you'll be able to stay here at Yamaku, but ultimately I have to recommend whatever is in your best interest. The board will decide with that recommendation in mind.
"To put it plainly, I need you to show me that you can handle yourself here.
We're not all against you, Wade. We're trying to help.
"Let's start with May 15th. What happened?"

'Alright, so... May 15th...'
Man, May feels like it was just a few weeks ago, and it's still just a giant haze... To be honest, I don't remember exactly what happened even if I did want to tell the truth!
'Hmm... Let's see... I was in my room, like usual... I think I was playing the Mass Effect remake, but I'm not quite sure, I mean, it was pretty long ago! And then, uh... I guess something just snapped. I was like "Whoa, what the hell am I doing with my life", you know? Like... My sister was out busting her ass off in order to care for my blind niece, all of my friends are working just as hard in order to get good grades, and here I am playing Mass Effect. Didn't seem right, y'know? So that's why I left. I'm not saying it was rational, but come on, Mr. Schmidt - don't tell me you've never done anything in your life just for the heck of it!'
Nailed it.

Well, it's a start.
Keep asking the right questions, let him answer. Standard procedure after all.
"Okay. You recognized that you weren't using your full potential, right? So you left to do something about it… what, exactly?

'Well, it wasn't like I had something particular in mind... I guess I just wanted to play life on Hard for a little bit, you know? So I left pretty much everything behind and just walked out. Cut all ties, started living on the streets, finding my food in the trash, that sort of thing. I know, maybe I should've told my family about this, but I didn't think they'd involve the police, and it's not like they would've allowed me to have this little adventure of mine, you know?'
He's totally buying it. Good work, Wade!

'I thought it'd make me tougher, you know? I mean, let's face it, I'm the son of one of the richest men alive, and I get everything I want! Nothing bad ever happens to me!'
Understatement of the friggin' millennium...
'So, you know, I just wanted to be able to look at myself in the mirror and be like "Yeah, I can handle rough". Does that make sense?'

Wade couldn't help but chuckle. 'Heh, I dunno! I guess there's only one way to find out, huh? I mean, I haven't been back to civilization for THAT long, you know. But either way, it was an interesting experience to go through. Not that I'll be repeating it any time soon, of course!'

"That's probably a wise decision.
"Had you considered how your unexpected disappearance might impact those around you? Your friends and family?"

Re: [Private] Can't Cure Crazy
Wade sighed, looking down. 'I guess not. I mean... I didn't think people would really care all that much, you know? Look, Mr. Schmidt, I know perfectly well that I'm not exactly the easiest person to be around. I've got maybe two people in the world that I can call friends, and neither of them has even spoken to me after I returned, so I guess our friendship wasn't worth that much to them in the first place. And I've never been particularly close to my family either, so I guess... I just didn't expect anyone would really care...' he finished, leaning back. That was the first time during the visit in which he was completely honest.

Re: [Private] Can't Cure Crazy
'Yeah, just look at all the love that resonates from everyone! Like my sister, who has banned me from seeing my niece for the foreseeable future! Or my so-called friends, who won't even look at me! Or my roommate who is hellbent on making my life a living hell 24/7! And let's not forget all of the people at the school or even on the streets who stare at me like I'm some sort of alien! Three days ago, I decided to take a shortcut through a back street, and there were three dudes standing there who literally ran away after seeing me! The whole city knows me as that crazy dude who ran away from home!' Wade took a breath before leaning forward, pressing his hands against his face. 'Why do I even want to stay here?'

"'Dude, are you kidding?'
Your friends and family are here. This school's the best thing that ever happened to you. Of course you want to stay. You just told me so yourself.
"As for everyone else? Strangers don't care. People have short memories. Within a week or two, they'll have forgotten all about it. The most anyone heard about it in the city was a blip in the newspaper, and I only noticed that because I'd already found out about it here.
"So you ran away for three months. Is that strange? Sure. Is it the strangest thing to have happened here at Yamaku? I think not. Are you going to let it hang over your head for the rest of your life?"

Re: [Private] Can't Cure Crazy
'Heh' Wade smiled sadly. 'Gotta love how the best thing that's ever happened to me seems to involve friends who won't look at me and family who's on the verge of disowning me...' he sighed. 'I don't... It's not like I want all of this shit to keep happening to me! All I want - all I ever wanted - was to have a normal life! To go to school with people who appreciate me, have some fun, make out with someone I love in the bathroom in between periods, and then go home to a loving family and playing some good games before eating a home-made meal... I don't want to be that crazy rich kid from Toronto whose father owns the most popular social network in existence... I don't want to keep eating stuff that I made myself, only to be treated to my roommate's complaints about it day in and day out! I don't want to be ostracized by my friends because of shit that I didn't even fucking do! And I don't want to love people who won't even look at me! Is that really so much to ask?!?' he yelled out to no one in particular.

Re: [Private] Can't Cure Crazy
On the contrary. It's the rest of the life that's hanging over his head.
He sighed again, before continuing in a softer tone.
"Yes.
Matter of fact, that's a very great deal to ask.
Everyone's looking for it, in one way or another. Few manage to find it.
"If that were really 'normal,' life would be a hell of a lot easier. But it's not.
You have to be tough; you were right about that. You have to work hard. You have to know who you can trust, and who you're better off away from.
"But give yourself more credit than that. You've made it this long. Your friends and family care more about you than you think. Remember, they're each dealing with their own problems too. They're still struggling to come to terms with this. Give them time, and they'll come around."

'Great... So what you're trying to tell me is that I should pretty much accept that I'll be alone for the rest of my life...' Wade sighed, his burst of energy having disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared. 'The thing, Mr. Schmidt, is that the people I trust - the people I want to be around - don't want anything to do with me. And the people I want to be away from need to be close by. Life fucking sucks'
