[Open] Night Life in Twin Peaks

The night soaked me in starlight and moonbrite as I laid against the pebble-stone bay. It was uncomfortable but I could make due for the time being. Though...a feeling of restlessness overtook the function of my extremities. It beckoned me to walk, to wander, to explore. The importance of being idle was lost on the foreign power; I was never one to sit still. The world had plenty in store. So, I rose to a sitting position, dusting my back, and then used the hoops of the surrounding fence to position me fully upright as a crutch.

I flicked on my dormitory light. Taking stock of the room, I retrieve the usual: A small composition notebook, two number two pencils, my cellular phone, contraceptives and the always accompanying CD player with a select stack of discs specifically for the night.

About twenty to thirty-five minutes later, I walk enter the town that bordered the hill which Yamaku is located. The streets are virtually devoid of human presence. Still, I walk on. Chance has a funny way of handing things to a person that forces one to adjust. I am always welcoming to something like that...or someone.

The sweet tooth had beckoned.

Now I walk the streets of the town with a cup of ice cream as the dark illuminates the memories of pedestrians walking the sidewalk earlier in the day.

Now it is a graveyard.

But I could not really give any less of a damn.

Why?

Because I got ice cream, that is why, and it was worth it too.

I may seem to act very mature for my age but that is one of my weaknesses for it, frozen desserts.

Down goes the last spoonful of semi-melted cream into my stomach.

Down goes the empty container into a trash can.

Now time to continue heading back.

My mind is void of thought but without any attention as I take a small shortcut through an alley way.

It is as if my mind is filled with static and fuzz as I emerge from the other side and accidentally bump into a girl.

The small impact wakes me immediately.

Whoops!

I look at the girl and then suddenly realize something.

.....Hey-wait!

A girl walking alone on an empty sidewalk gets bumped into by a boy coming out of a dark alley.

This may just end badly...

It took a fraction of a second to uppercut the man with a swift force to his jaw, causing him to stagger back. My stance was on the offensive and I regarded the shadow until his personage was illuminated under the glow of a florescent streetlight. A young adult about the same age as I perhaps...or maybe older. I slightly lower my fists and steady my breath. With a click, the sardonic collected billow of Brazilian Portuguese is translated to a neat Kanto Japanese.

("One should do best not to emerge through shady folkways and slink through surroundings like this. It puts other lone passengers on edge. I do apologize for my assault on you but to be fair, it was in defense.")

Everything becomes fuzzy. Bright sprites cloud my vision and fly around like a thousand, little, white fireflies.

My legs attempt to catch me and fail miserably. The sprites collide with actual starts.

This definitely ended badly.

I hit the pavement.

"Uuuugh~~~~....."

The combination of me not being in my right mind anymore and a monotone, lifeless voice leads to a strange conclusion on what happened.

..D-..D-did I get..mugged by a robot?...

...My god, I-...I got mugged by a robot..

I try to speak but my messed up senses and numb jaw only allow me to make strange noises that remotely sound like mentally insane speech.

"Tza gahss~ I gsss 'u'd 'y~eh~o'ot..."

Translation: 'My god, I got mugged by a robot.'

("Children in this day and age... I almost feel ashamed that I am amongst their numbers. Such weak constitutions. I remember back at the orphanage, a child would be smacked hard across the face with a thin, hard-polished flat paddle and yet he could rise without the slightest tear but the most righteous indignation in his eyes from his soul. Such awful circumstances but still strong people emerged. You just do not see such in developed countries...")

A handkerchief falls into the boy's lap from my fingers.

("Clean yourself up. Go see a doctor. If anything should be inquired, I will take the blame of your injury but do know it was self-defense.")

Things start to clear up and the sprites slowly die. It is only until the handkerchief lands on me that I regain a small sense of consciousness.

Doctor? Injury? Self defense?

"Hu-?"

I move my jaw to speak but am greeted by an electric feeling. Pain shocks through the bottom of my face.

"-Ah!"

Wow-that hurts!

It hurts but it doesn't feel like my jaw is broken, thank the world.

I really should be more careful. There is a reason I'm here, after all.

Still dizzy, I start to use the wall to help me up.

"Mm.."

I look back up at the girl.

Jeez, why do I always run into the stronger women? That is never good for someone with bones like mine...

"Thorry.."

A nod greeted his affected apology.

("I apologize once more.")

Though my stern demeanor, with its clear, strong gaze, barely looked apologetic as if on some subtle iron-like defense.

("Shall I help you back? to wherever you need to be at present?")

I stumble from the wall and make an attempt to stand.

A mumble carries from my lips as I rub my jaw.

"I'm on'y goin' up t' Ya'aku."

"I sh'd 'e fi'e."

However, I stumble and start to fall again when I experience another sudden dizzy spell.

Yamaku? Hmm...it would seem reasonable that the student body would bleed into the adjacent town...

With a soft suck of the teeth, I help the boy to his feet and drape his arm around my shoulder so as to help his weight along as he walked.

("Come...I will find you back to your lodgings. I am a student as well...it would kill two birds with one rock if i were to bring you anyway.")

I plop onto the girl's shoulder rather unexpectedly.

Even with a normal way of speaking, I get the vibe that the girl would be just as...terrifying

Actually, who's to say that is not her actual voice? The voice of her words seem stone-hard; unbreaking.

Stubborn.

I know that cannot be someone's actual voice but, with this girl it seems like that may be proven wrong.

Like, she could throw all of that out the window.

Normal-metaphorically and literal throwing-that-sense-out-of-a-window-because-it-made-her-mad-metaphorically.

She's going to carry some of my weight all the way up to the dorms?!

No~..No, I can't let her do that. I'll relieve her when we reach the road up the hill.

My lips seem to move by themselves as we depart the combat area...or the die area, as one who witnessed the event might call it.

"S-so what's your name?"

("Myra. Or do you prefer the whole name? Usually my God-given title is referred to rather than my family name which this country refers too first.")

Myra?

I look to the left at the girl and just now realize that she is a foreigner. 

"However you want, I suppose."

"I'd prefer your last name, though."

I would rather people did not think I was dating the girl that nearly knocked me out with that uppercut.

That may end up with me getting uppercut again be knocked out that time...

"My name is Taketa."

I knelt my head forward slightly in understanding.

("Ferreira.")

Crisis averted. I live another day.

A small silence before I decide to continue.

"So, what's your story on coming here?"

Quickly realizing what I asked, I add more to clarify and to keep my tact...well...intact.

"To Japan?"
